CHRISTMAS IN 1839 Eva Emery Dye, in her book "MsLaush in and Old Oregon" in describing Christ nas at Fort Vancouver in 1859 says: rat goose, cranes, swai.s so fat that they swam in grease, plum-duff and biked quails, white to the bone. These the Otegon epecuries ate for Christmas dinner in 1839." A few davs ago, while the air was fill ed with snow flakes, it looked as tho we would have the music of the sleigh bells to add to the Christmas joy, but it looks now that we will have to forgo that pleasure. There will be no paper issued from this office tomorrow. Of all the years the Observer has been issued, this Christmas season, from a labor standpoint has been t'-e most trying. And those who have boin the blunt will appreciate a diy of freedom. , We wish vou one and all a Merry Christmas. There is no disguising the fact that ihristmas of the twentieth century sort is loosing with each year the true Christ spirit and giving away to commercialism To too many the former pleasures are now burdens. Dollars are now required when cents formerallygave the most true happiness. Christmas however, has simply kept pace with the strensness of the American spirit. We are living in too rapid an age. In fact not tivir? but existing in a whirlwind of forces, social and business, that gives us no opportunity to live. The simpler life Is much more to be desired. It s tc he heptd that after returnire from their holiday vacation our national lawmakers wnl return with more of the milk of human kindness and rot act like a lot ef chronic rbeumaticsdnxiouslyawait ing for an opportunity to enter a protest against every measure presented. 4 ' KITCHEN CABINET: SUITABLE FOR A I CHRISTMAS GIFT I W.
