At the conclusion of the first half of the play the auditors are dismissed. The reassemble at 9:30 pm when they re ma n until the performance is finished. During the interval the vast audience is at liberty to prominade in the grounds "surrounding the odei a house, or partake of dinner at one pf the several excellent restaurants in the grounds. At the com mencement of the play, as well also as at the beginning of the second part, three costumed trumpeters appear in the lobby of the theatre and sound a charac teristic blast upon their instruments that notifies all interested that it is time to be seated. This unique custom was also carried out in like manner in New York C'ty at the Metropolitan Theatre. The entire performance is give.i in one sitting but, so as to thviate the necessity of th e play lasting till too late an hour, the first act begins pnmptiy at 7:45 p m. The practice of giving the warning of cem mancement with the trumpeters is how ever, adhered to. Mr. Sawyer, of the firm of Sawyer & Pierce, wa in the city today and con firmed the report that he had purchased the fine Jersey dairy of John McAlister, consisting of thirty cowV The company is now milking ninety-fiv cows, employ ing three expert Swiss milkers. Mr. Sawyer states that he has had several experienced dairymen visit his place, which was formerly the Wade farm near Hot Lake, and all agree that he has the largest and best dairy herd in Eastern Oregon. During tne past two yecrs he has been buying the best cows in the valley and was fortunate in securing the prize herds of John L. Caviness, Peach Bros., John McAlister and choice cows from otier goad breeders. Mr. Sawyer is enthusiastic over the r suits in dairying. He states that his present herd as a herd averages five per cent in butter fat, which means that he can make each cow net him $50 per year. As compared with the prices com mon cattle are selling for and have been for the past few years. Mr. Sawyer says that dairying is much more profitable. He has a contract for furnishing the Hot Lake san itarium with milk and cream and the balance, which of conrse is by far the greater part of his output, goes to the La Grande creamery. The rooms have been fitted up with desks and Remington typewritters and by to morrow the school will be in full blast. Miss Slattery, the proprietor, will be assisted by Miss M, Seibricht. Both the instructors have a large ex perience in commercial teaching and are well equipped for the work. Shorthand is the subject taught at present, but La Grande has been promised a modern business coliege provided the initial steps in this line meets with success. A school which will teach all the phases of a com mercial course is what Miss Slattery is contemplating.
