six years after the settlement ot James
town in 1 627. This churchyard will be
interesting to visitors to the Jamestown
Exposition as it is one of the most ancient
burying grounds in the United States.
There are other tombs of great intertst
and the inscriptions are strange and wonderful.
Among the historical relics of greatest
national interest that visitors to me
Jamestown Exposition may see is the

when he signed the D.claration of Inde
pence. It is of Mahogany upholstered in
leather. It stands in the vestry room of
St. Paul's church in the city of Norfolk,
and there it may"be seen by ail who visit
that famous old church.
The state of Caifornia. to big to be
left out of any exposition, is contemplat-

at the Jamestown Ter-Centenial. The
fruits and minerals will belargly exploited
and the lumber interests will make a
great display in Forestry building.

The colls for the city prison are nearing
completion and in a few days the keys
will be turned over to the police authori
ties. An Indian who heard the hammer
ing stopped add looked in long enough to
see what was going on, gave a big grunt
and as he moved off was heard to say,
"Huh! skookem house." That certainly
'expresses it as forceable as would be
possible in any language. The only pleas
ure that any citizen of La Grande can
view it, is the fact th it it was made by
the La Grande Iron Works, a home institution.
