phy today directly charged the repres
entatives of the Independence league of
demanding money from Tammany can
didates for congress and the state senate.

It is likewise supposed that the holdup

had no hand in the graft. Hearst's man
agers have promised to investigate and
say that if anything of the kind be true,
the parties will be punished.

tion with the murder of Willard Moody,
the well known rancher of that valley
who was so foully murdered on the night
of Sept. IS. Sheriff Ed Rand made the

The arrest of Widdowson has been al
most as great a surprise to the people
of Pine and Eagle valleys as was the
murder of Moody. No one out there
seems to have the slightest idea of what
Widdowson's connection with the crime
may or can be. The people at Pine are
at a loss to account for the arrest of
Widdowson, notwithstanding the fact that

matinee in the Olympic theatre this after
noon, the bankers, who are in convention
here, didn't begin their morning discus
sion on currency reform. , It has been

This afternoon the convention visited the
Anhausher-Bush brewery.
It was unanimously favored to urge
congress to pass legislation to compell

conn ction with the murder. His arrest
was the first intimation the people of
Pine had that he was even under suspic
ion.
When the sheriff and his prisoner
reached rfichland last night that the town

as the surprise was as great to them as
it had been to the people of Pine. When
Sheriff Rand brought his prisoner before
justice of the peace at Richland this morn
ing both the state and the prisoner waived
the preliminary hearing, and the sheriff
started immediately for Biker City with
his prisoner.
NEW THEORY ADVANCED
The new theory is that Moody was not
murdered where the body was fouud, bjt
I that he was murdered some other place
and his body carried to the little clump of
brush back of the store at Pine. And the
circumstances and evidence at hand seems
to bear out his theory.
It will be remembered that at the time
the dead body was discovered there were
no evidences of a struggle around the
Dlace and no footprints discernable. It
looked as if the Moody had fallen when
shot and had not moved after striking the
around. But it is said that more careful
investication showed that his face could
not have been mutilated as it was without
leaving some evidence of the force of the
blows on the ground under his head, but
the evidence was not there. . It is believed
in the valleys that on this theory Widdow
son has been arrested. .

and impressive religious ceremony took
place in the Cathedral of the Immaculate
Conception here today when th Rev,
Louis S. Walsh, of Salem, Mass., was
consecrated Roman Catholic Bishop of
Maine. Bishop Hawkins conducted the
ceremonies and was assisted by many
prominent prelates from all parts of New

Chicago, Oct. 18. The stockholders
of th Chicago and Northwestern railroad
today voted to issue their total capital
stock of $200,000,000 which provides
for the doubling of the $100,000,000

extension of the lines and to build depots
and bridges. The new depot at Chicago
which will cost $20,000,000 is included.
Chauncy Depew and Henry Frike are
among the directors elected. The officers
refuse to admit that they are to extend
their lines to the Pacific.

over time turning out half dollars. And
still there is a cry for more. The mint
last month bought 1,5000.000 ounces. At
that time silver reached seventy cents per
ounce and it is predicted that it will reach
seventy-five cents this month. Superin

is here inspecting the output.

Taft this morning announced that General
Funston would be placed in command o f
the Southwestern division and that the
headquarters would be changed from
Oklahoma to St Louis. General Greely
will be given the Command of the North
ern division and his headquarters will be
moved from St. Louis to Chicago.
FIRST SCHOOL FOR NEW SPEI LING

school, the first of its kind was opened
her this afternoon in the Assembly Hall
of the West Side Y M C A 320 West 67
St The course will be free and open to
all men who wish to learn the system of
spelling employed by the President and
authorized by the United Sta'es Civil
Service Commission. The school is in
charged of Warren Read of the English
faculty of the High School of Commerce.
MAY GRANT REPRIEVE

this afternoon issued a certificate upon
the governor of Missouri calling for the
entire record in the case of Aggie Meyer
who is sentenced to hang next week. It
is likely to result in another reprieve being

a number of the bieeest soap manufact
ures have combined. The investigation
shows an alliance of the English and
American soap trusts and that J. P. Mor
gan is engineering the American end.
Proctor and Gamble aie used as a wedge
for the formation and amalgamation, and
the American and Continental soap man
ufacturers are invited to join. The capit
alization of the English combine is placed
at $T5,000,000.
MAIN SCHOOL EXHIBITS

Lewiston. Oct. 18 An entirely new
and interesting feature at the annual re
union of School Teachers was introduced
here today at the annual meeting of the
Main Teachers Association. Each city
in the state had an exhibition of some
special branch of school work as follows:
Bangor, Kindergarden work; roruana,
manual training; Augusta, arawing in
elementary schools; Lewiston, arithme
tic; Eastport, language in grammar
grades; Gardiner, natural studies in
elementary schools; Brewer, music in
elementary schools; South Portland,
history in grammar schools. Th idea
was so uccessful that it will be intro-

LAND LORD DIES

Scully whose onwership of lands jn the
state of Illinois caused such a revulsion
against alien land lords a few years ago
died in England yesterday leaving an
estate o f 1 00,000 acres of the very best
lands in Illinois. Ha came penniless to
this state in 1850.
SAVING SUBMERGED CREW

Paris, Oct. 18. A dispatch from Ad
miral Bellne, who is trying to rescue the
crew from a submarine wreck near Lutin,
says this morning, that he has caught the
hull at a depth of eighteen feet lying In
such a position that there are even hopes
of getting it to the surface soon. The
ministry of marines is holding out hop
for the men inside the wreck.

who buncoed an old farmer out of $5,0C0
were arrested here today. The farmer
had withdrawn the money from the bank
in good faith carrying the same in an old
gunny sack which was substituted for

iron washers. The old gentlemen did

COAL FAMINE

Oeden. Utah., Oct. 18.-As a result of
the coal famine in this city the street cars
have been compelled to stop today for
want of fuel. The sugar factory closed
last night. The dealers have declined to
sell to large concerns but are filling a few
family order. Th limited supply was
caused by the tack of transportation.
