During its one performance her, it demonstrated that even cities smaller than Portland can have a good comic opera once in a while. There were pretty girls with fine voices and combined with the interest they manifested in their work, it was easy for them to hold the spectators in high mirth. TONIGHT In as much as there is no sentiment in business, it must be sheer merit that keeps Jane Corcoran in the lead. Season after sea ton of supplying the amusement pub lic with the very best, has made the Jane Coicoran's theatre patrons legion. This star's chief aim is to please the amuse ment public, and realizing the fact that this surest way to do this is to furnish a first-class program, she strives incess antly to keep abreast of the times and furnish her patrons with the newest and most extraordinary production. Every phase of the question "What shall 1 fur nish the public" has been carefully gone over by her with the result of the seasor. ft 4, V ' l'- she has a play and production that is superior in every respect to anything she has ever yet appeared in. The play is from the pen of Cosmo Gordon Leniox who wrote the play for Mr. Charles Froham, and was produced at the Empire Theatre in Broadway, New York City, where it received a long and extended run. The leading character so pleased Miss Corcoran that her manager Arthur C. Aiston was induced to obtain same for her for the road. A capable company has been secured, with James M. Brophyas her chief support, and the entire prouu;tion is carried and will be used during her engagement at Stewards Opera House, Thursday Oct, 9. "A MAD LOVE" AT THE TACOM A. "A Mad Love." which was presented at the Tacoma theatre last night by a capable company with Miss Maretta binart as the leading woman, met with marked success and was cordially re ceived. The house was well filled and especially captivated by the excellent acting of Miss Smart, whose interpreta tion of her role, which is an exacting and intricate one, brought forth much applause and amply proved the merit which she is known to possess. The appreciation shown Gus Ingalls as Benjamin Johnson and J. P. Jones as Robert Audley was probably equally divided, and the strong acting of Craig Myers as Sir Micheal Audley commended itself to the audience. The work of Miss Margurette Johnson in the role of Alice Audley also deserves mention, The scene is laid in England and the plot is a new version and dramatization of "Lady Audley's Secret," "A Mad Love" is exceedingly interesting and vir ile, being much superior to its melo-dram-alic title, which is misleading and apt to make one predjudiced before seeing it produced.
