It is a conservative estimate that at least fifty new homes will be built in La Grande next year as a direct result of the erection of the big saw mill now in course of construction. Add to this our natural growth and it is evident that 1 907 will be a building year in La Grande. This paper will not publish anv article appearing over a nom-de-plume. The big apples were certainly in evi dence at the fair this week. The time is near at hand when we will be shipping just such stock as being exhibited, in train loads. There should have been an automobile race at the fair. There are a number of good machines in the sounty If not race an auto parade would have been quite an attraction. The unusual interest manifest at the fair this week at the exhibit of gasoline engines for irrigation purposes is indica tive of the general growing interest in irrigation. There will be many individual pumping plants installed in this valley during the next few years. Gasoline will furnish the power in not a few instances while electric power will be used for asimilar purpose. JohnGavan Sqt j The large monthly payroll of the Grand Ronde Lumber Co. at Perry has been of great benefit in past years to La Grande and will continue so to be for many years to come. In Pennsylvania the other day seventy people celebrated the thirtieth birthday of a horse. Ai any rate, that is an improve ment on the Newport dog and monkey society events.
