United States Government for use by the
army, will be opened at the United States
Armory in this city this afternoon. The
chief of ordnance has decided the amun
ition, which is a cartridge of 45 caliber
with a jacketed lead bullet weishini? 250
grains. There will be two types of the
same cartridge one using 6.02 ar.d the
other 7.02 grains of smokeless powder.
The cartridge for the aumotic Diatol
will have no rim as the shell is extracted
by the recoil.
GUY IS RECOVERING
William Guy. the brakeman who sus
tained a broken back three months ago
in a railway aicident near Baker City,
and has been in St Vincent's hospital in
this city ever since, has recovered suffi
ciently to occasionally ride about the hos
pital in a rolling chair. Notwithstanding
this improvement a broken back is con
?HaH hv fttinreons to be incurable and
the doctors attending Mr. Guy say he will
never recover. He will be an invalid all
his life, and it is but a question of how
long his vitality can ward off the death
that is inevitable. Though the patient
realizes that he will never be well again,
and that death is only a question of time,
he is cheerful and bears his suffering with
the greatest fortitude. Portland Telegram,
HOP PICKING BEGINS
The West Side Enterprise of Independ
ence says of the opening of the hoppick
ing season:
Twelve thousand active pickers, 24,000
flexible arms; 120,000 nimble fingers are
now at work in the Independence hop
fields. The body of pickers is now here
though there are still some coming In
daily.
; Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday the
streets of Independence were alive with
the arriving pickers. The streets are by
no means deserted yet, but most of the
pickers have found their way to the var
ious hopyards and are living in the tented
cities in the fields and groves. Every
large hopyard now represents a live-awake
village of 200 to 1000 inhabitants.
There is no lack of life around the hop
yard cities. The stores, amusement halls.
merry-go-rounds, . music, singing, horse
racing, and other diversions serve to en
liven the scenes and lend a charm that
that tends to fasinate people with hop
yard life.
Picking, too, has begun in most of the
yards, though not all, and at 60 cents a
box many have already started their
little hoppicking bank acoount.
i Though the country seems to be alive
with people who have been coming in one
continuous procession the past week, the
yards are not overrun with pickere. In
fact a number of the smaller yards are
looking out for more pickers.

W. D Grandy and James A. Russell under
the firm name of Grandy & Russell has
been dissolved by mutual consent, and
that by the terms of said dissolution James
A. Russell becomes the owner of all prop
erty heretofore owned by the co-partnership,
and will collect all sums due said
partnership, and pay all partnership liabilities.

CALL FOR BIDS
Notice is hereby given that the under
signed will receive sealed bids up to and
including the Third day of October, 1906,
for the construction of a wooden (com
bination) bridge to be built over the Big
Ditch on what is known as the Randall
Road, said bridge to be built in accord
ance with the plans and specifications
now on file in my office,
i Sealed bids will also be received on or
before the above mentioned date for the
construction of a steel bridge over the
Grande Ronde River near the mill site
of the Palmer Lumber Company near
La Grande, Oregon. Said bridge to be a
JOQ foot span. 16 feet In width, with
first class concrete abutements, a good
quality of steel and shall be built 10 feet
above the bed of the river. Each bidder
is required to furnish his own plans and
specifications for said bridge.
The County Court of Union County,
Oregon, reserves the right to reject any
or all bids.
