From twelve o'clock tonight until De cember first, the life of the grouse will be in constant danger. In anticipation of the open grouse season, lovers -of that sport are today lining up before Deputy Clerk Bramwell and by noon today he had is sued twenty-four licenses, making a total of three hundred and fifty two for this year, an increase of eighty-three over this time of last year. Hunters should carefully read the pub lished game laws and summary. A fact that should be remembered in the quail ber, also that no one person is allowed more than ten grouse in one day. Following is a section of the Game Laws of Oregon which should be read and reread before taking down the old musket: East of the Cascade Mountains (Except County of Wasco): Pheasant, Quail. It shall be unlawfal at any time in that portion of the state of Oregon lying east of the Cascade mountains, to hunt, pur sue, take, kill, injure, destroy, or have in ' possession, except for scientific or breed- 1 ing purposes, or to sell or offer for sale, ! barter, or exchange, any pheasant, except native pheasants (some times called ruff led grouse) ; or to hunt, pursue, take, kill, injure, destroy, or have in possession, ex cept for scientific or breeding purposes, or to sell or offer for sale, barter or ex change, any sage hen, sage cock, grouse or native pheasant (sometimes called ruf fled grouse), at any time between the first day of December of each year and the fifteenth day of August of the follow ing year; or to hunt, pursue, take, kill, in jure, or destroy, or have in possession, except for scientific or breeding purposes, or to sell oi offer for sale, barter or ex change, any quail, at any time except be tween the second Saturday in September of each year and the third Tuesday of the same month in the same year; and it shall be unlawful for any person during such open season to kill more than six quail in one day, or more than twelve quail in one week; or to hunt, pursue, take, kill, injure, destroy, or have in possession, except for scientific or breeding purposes, or to sell or offer for sale, barter or exchange, any . - . TEACHERS' ANNUAL INSTITUTE On September third, fourth, and fifth, all the pedagogues of Union county, will assemble in this city to either take an active part or else just listen to other men, educators, more learned perhaps than they .who will disccurse and expound on the many phases of a teacher's field. County Superintendent Bragg has arranged a very interesting program for these dates, and every teacher in the county should avail him or herseif of this opportunity. Among those who will be heard are State Superindentent J. H. Ackerman, who is-down for three of his entertaining and instructive addresses, E. D. Ressler, J. A. Churchhill, W. C. Hartranft, J. G. Hartranft, and City Superintendent H. J. Sage cock Same. Grouse Same. You are not allowed to kill more than 1 0 in one day. Native pheasants Sometimes called ruffled grouse same. Quail Open season from the second , Saturday to the third Tuesday in Sept al ember of each year. You are not allowed I to kill more than six quail in one day, nor more than twelve in one week.: China pheasants -Open season from September 15th, 1909, to December 15th 1909. . Ducks Open season from September 1 st of each year to February 1 st of the following year. You are not allowed to kill more than fifty ducks in one week, Geese Open season from September 1st of each year to February 1st of the following year. Swan Same. Prairie chicken Open season from Sep tember 16th, 1909, to December 16th, 1909. Buck deer Open season from August 15th to November 1st of each year. Female deer Open season from Sept ember 1st to November 1st of each year. You are not allowed to kill any . deer prior to one-half hour before sunrise, nor later than one hour after sunset, and it is unlawful to hunt deer at any time with dogs. Elk Open season from September 15th 1907, to October 15th, 1907. i Fishermen who have spent some time in the mountains report that the grouse are plentiful and the season will no doubt be a busy one.
