Throjgh spon taneous combustion, caused by threshing smutty wheat, Budd Nelson, a Wild Horse Creek farmer has lost two threshing ma- cnines curing the present harvesting sea son. The former of the machines was burned several weeks ago, and a new Niagara thresher, which he had' just pur chased to replace the burned one, was de stroyed shortly after be;ng started up at the same setting. In both instances the threshers were set afire by explosions in the cylinder, the same being presumably caused by smutty wheat. The former machine was valued at $500. whiie the second one cost $ 1 400 and was insured for $900. THEY WAST TO HUNT The first lady to take out a hunter't li cense for her own use this season was Mrs. Lillian Balsh, wife of Quartermaster Sergeant Thomas B. Baish of Fort Wright, and in contrast to the licenses issued for the men License Clerk R. W. Butler of the county auditor's office affixed a gold seal to the lady's license. In addition to a license for herself, Mrs. Balsh took out licenses for her husband and her father, James Leeper. Among the licenses issued yesterday were three to Game Warden J. A. Uhlig for himself and his two sons. Eleven li censes were issued yesterday. Ex. JUROR'S CHILDREN KILLED Springfield, Mo., August 9. - The trial of the men charged with the lynching of sev eral negroes here several months ago be gan today. Soon after the trial was be gun. J. L. Maxey, one of the regular pa-el of jurors, received word that his house, 15 miles west of Springfield, had been struck by lightning, his two children killed and the house destroyed. But the Chief maintained that the only hours for spr.nkling in La Grande were from 5:50 to 7:50, and he wouldn't make any exception for the circus." Mr. Precard narrowly escaoed death as the team ran about 60 yards dragging him under ths machine. Dr. Todd of Adams, accompanied Mr. Pecard to St. Anthony's homital in Pendleton where Dr. W. Q. Cole was cal led to assist in an operation. GENERAL NEWS From the activity of the ante-trust forces in various sections of the country, there is a cold comfort in the ice business these days. A Newport News dispatch says that a man in that place shot and killed his wife at her request. Wonder if it will be said of that man when he dies that he was a kind man and indulgent husband?. If those North Carolina lynchers are apprehended and tried, why should they not set up the defense of emotional insan ity? CHANCE TOR ENGINEER While there is said to be no scarcity of marine engineers, it appears impossible for the Government to employ a man willing to fill a position on lightship No. 67, stationed off the mouth of the Colum bia River. Search for a licensed engineer all along the Coast has been without result. In the mean time there is only one man in the engineer room of the light ship, and it is held that the duties are too severe for him. Unless he is soon given assistance there is a possibility that he will demand a material increase in salary. The billet for which no one can be secur ed is worth $100C a year, and leave of absence is invariably granted upon appli cation. Usually a man is ashore about three months out of the 1 2 but his pay goes on just the same. Ex. .
