BARN DESTROYED BY fIRE Fire destroyed the large barn on the farm of Jess Spencer, near Union, on Tuesday afternoon, together with several saddles, a surry, several tons of hay, etc. Mr. Spencer's two children barely escaped with their lives. O R At N naatanM. f.ln M. 1 . ... j i m i w i u 1 1 i , u. t was delayed until 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon by an accident to the engine and by the failure of the block signal system to work satisfactory where the improvements are being made to the track. The passenger brakeman was required to walk about 25 miles down the mountain today to flag through, the signals being found out of position at almost every signal station. When the track repairs are completed the signals will work all right again. A freight engine pulled the train into Pendleton. TEACHER'S EXAMINATION County School Suprintendent. assisted by principal of Union's school, and Miss Kuhn, of this city, are conducting a teachers' exainmition this week at the high school building. Thirty-one ap plications ars now writing for the county certificate and six are trying for the state right to teach. Tne county teacher's pa;ers will all becompleted by Friday evening of this week but the state ex amination w.ll go over into next week. Miss Vira Hart and sister, Mrs. Metzler came down from Hilgard yesterday to take in the circus. Mrs. T. E. Bueler and daughter left this morning for Boise, Idaho where Mrs. Bueler will visit her mother. Ira Cowan, of Elgin, was among the many who visited the circus from that locality. The attendance at the afternoon per formance of the circus yesterday is con servatively estimated at 12,000. Mr. and Mrs. Wm, Combs returned to their home in Wallowa this morning after a brief visit at the J. M. Lilly home. Mike Fitzgerald and family of Elgin, was in the city yesterday to see the cir cus. Mr. Fitzgerald says this is the first circus he has visited in fifteen years. Bread and cake will be soli at Grandy & Russell's meat market on Saturday afternoon by the ladies of the Methodist church. The ladies of the Methodist church will have a cooked food sale at Grandy & Russell's meat market on Saturday after- n- on. Mrs. Hattie McDonald and daughter Jean, who are camping in the mountains, will be in the city every Monday and Thursday tfc meet their music pupils. Fred Ashley and wife of Ontario, who are on their way to Wallowa, visited in the city t.day, the guests of Mrs. Fred Currey. Mrs. Marsh and daughters Misses Ber tha and Bessie of Pendlaton who have been visiting with Dr. and Mrs. P. A Charlton, returned to their home last ev ening. Mrs. William Allinson, Mr. and Mrs, Bater of Union, and Mr. Henry Spence of Island City left this morning for Wal Iowa where they will combine business with pleasure, for a few days. Mrs. Mary Mitchell left this morning for Union and returns tonight. Misses Gertrude and Blance Mitchell leave with their mother this evening for Port land to be gone untill September. Miss Gertrude will return in time to take up her school work. W. M. McKay, of Wallowa county, who has been in Hot Lake for the past three weeks, was a caller at this office today and told us that he has a promising crop on his farm in Wallowa county. Mr. McKay is new at farming business but thinks grains will grow for him as well as a professional faomer. He leaves to night for his home. MARRIED MARRIED-In the office of County Judge Henry, last evening C. R. Cowan to Cathrine A. Darr. The groom and bride will make their home in Elgin where parents of both parties now reside. Adams Avenue and Greenwood WALLOWA FOREST FIRES For the first time this year this district has been clouded by the smoke of forest fires. Last week a blaze was started on the west bank of Indian Creek canyon, covering some hundreds of acres of the best timber land of that section, ar.d rapidly spreading in a south ar.d east direction. It will, unless assisted by a heavy wind, soon be under control, as a party of firefighters of that section is putting forth all possible resistance. The loss will not exceed $10,000. Mr. and Mrs. Nelson took the little child up to Kapiela last Monday as it ha been ill for a little mora than a week then.
