Every livery stable, feed yard and hitching rack was full of teams today. A glance at the fine fat horses and up- to-date carriages with which the farmers came to town today was sufficient to demonstrate the fact that La Grande farmers are prosperous. The toy ballon did not last all day. but the effects of the pop corn and pink lemon nade reached for into the night, therefore things will be averaged. STILL WORKING The idea prevailed at the begining of the land fraud cases in this state that it was all a political scheme inanugerated to catch a few of the "Big fish" and that would be all there was to it. That idea was a mistaken one and the convictions continue and the untried docket yet re mains a long one. mi mmm or history On Monday, July 23, just three months and five days after the great fire (for history, Mayor Schmitz tells us, begins with that event), the public schools of San r'rancisco reopened. To the forty-nine bu Uings that had escaped the burning in multitude of healthy, strong children rlocked. Taniitd by the sun and wind, refreshed b, months of living in the open air, for hundreds of them had sojourned in tents in refugee camps th-jughout the summer months, they formed the nucleu of the great army which his been grow ing in numbers every oay since the schools once more swung their portals wide. One week later the school attendance had grown from 24.694 to 29.000, and the tide has not yet reached the flood. This coming back of the children with their joy in their work, their vigor, their enlhusisam, their bright eager faces, is a characteristic sign of optimistic spir t of all our people in accepting existing condit ions. . A hard lot of troubles to contend with, spring from a torpid liver and blockaded bowels, unless you awaken them to their proper action with Dr. King's New Life Pills; thepleas antest and most effective cure for Cons tipation. Farmers complain that many things are not right and that certain reforms are impertively required. The wage earner, as usual wants a larger return for his labor, aspires to his own home, and to knave his family enjoy comfort which a few years ago were the luxuries of of the few, Th nuagtr of industry it constantly striving to find meant of avoiding waste and of increasing profits. Investigators want to make money fas but an increasing proportion of them are still more anxious to find investimentt that will yield, say 5 per. annum with out any lost whatever of principal. Science and invention are constantly making dis;overies and Improvements that are working great changes in life and i: dustr Women are striving for more rights and wider usefulness. In religion and in other fields of thought the forceof inquiry and change is also active. In all this unrest and ferment some conservative people she only cause for alarm. As a nutter of fact, the situation is full of hope. If people were lazily satisfied, if they were mentally stagnant, if they were not striving for a hish motility sr.d s .! nii-itiilfv then indeed alarm might be well felt for the future. Enemies of the body politic all who fatten by (pedal privilige for the few at the expense of the many, thrive best among acqiescent people. When the public is wideawake, ever on the alert over its pressing problems, progress is in in the air.Stagnat people can be aroused and secure their rights only through revolution. People who are physicially and intellectually active will progress through evolution. And there's all differ ence in the world between evolution and revolvtion.-Oregon Judd Farmer.
