Yesterday was a gala day for lodge 862 of Brotherhood of Locomotive Engi neers. The reason for it all was the presence of First Assistant Qrand Chief A. B. Willis of Cleveland who is making a tour of the .coast inspection B. of L. E. lodges. Due to kindness of the O. R. & N. officials practically all of the old engineers on the La Grande division were in La Grande and attended the banquet The festivities opened with a secret meeting of lodge members at two o'clock in the afternoon after which the "Boys" swapped stories and shook hands with friends until seven when the banquet proper began. Promptly at the hour set about thirty engineer with their ladies and a few specially invited guests assembled at the K. of P. hall and partook of a royal banquet After satis fying nature's craving for' delicasies, Toastmaster Henry Henson made him self heard. Engineer J. W. Eagan res ponded briefly on "The Ladies' Cnief Dispatcher A. A. Buckley won much applause for his wit and humor in responding to call for a toast on "How married man ahould behave and be happy." "Dick", still panting from the effects of his hurried arrival, told with much'modest humor of his difficulties in making an ap propriate toilet due to the fact that Mrs. Buckley had failed to hunt his collar but tons and other little trinkets necessary in preparing one's self for so elaborate an affair as the one he was attending. Train Master J. D. Matheson gave an entertaining toast on general railroad sub jects, which was heartily applauded. The address of the evening came when the guest of honor, A. E. Wills, was called In a very pleasing manmr he told ef the progress the locomotive engineer had made not only in efficiency but in morali ty. A few years ago, he said, the engineer wa considered a good fellow if he could put away much fire water and spend all the money he earned. As vears went'bv. the demand for sober, clear-brained men has put out of commission the earner type of men. Now the ma'nritv of an.inaar have homes and families and raorasant a class of men notea for their genial dis position and for the most part a class of men that go to make ud the best citizens of their respective home cities. He con tinued by telling of the strength of the union. He said that at present there are fifty-four thousand members, of which number ten thousand have been added during the last two years. In wld Mexi co the wages of the engineer have been increased on an average of thirty-five per cent in very lata years. In America the railroad officials are meeting the demands of the union in a business-like way. These many concessions were made, he explained not because ot strikes and bulldozing, but because the brotherhood of locomotive en gineers had at its head a set of conserva tive, broad-minded men who do things after easeful consideration and never do a rash act From an insurance point of view the lodge is the strongest of any labor organization now existing. It was nine o'clock when the happy crowd of sixty arose from the banquet and without an exception felt that it was the most pleasing "Blowout" that the lodge has had in many moons. J. F. Johnson of the Spokane Cafe acted as chef and many were the compliments he received for his tasty spring chicken, salads, and otherwise elaborate menu. oesides the delicious eatibles on the menu, Mr. S. H. Pattan of Fruitdale had presented the lodge with several gallons of Bings, and the way the fruit disappeared spoke well of the appreciat ion the guests felt for the gift. LA GRANDE! LA GRANDE The ei gineers of the city yesterday morning headed by Henry Henson went to the depot to meet passenger train No. 6. thinking they were to meet H. E. Wills, in whose honor the big celebration yester day was for. Their chagrin can better be imagined than described as the train pulled in but no first assistant master stepped off. Thinking he might possibly have missed the committee, a visit to all the hotels and restaurants of the city was made with no results. Mr. Wills' story: Sometime during the morning when the porter in the Pullman thought he was near La Grande, he picked up Mr. Wills' grips and when the train stopped, stepped off. Wills thought no doubt the porter knew his business and followed his grip. The stop was only momentarily and with a whiff the train was gone again. It was from a bystand er on the platform that Mr. Wills asked for the best hotel in town, and and incid entally learned that he was in Perry. After muc.i anxiety and delay he found a Perry ite who was willing to drive him to the real La Grande, where the guest of honor and the reception committee of the en gineers had no trouble in finding each other. The joke, Mr. Wills said, was on Perry.
