I Like many of the multi-millionaires of America. Russell Saee. the "father of puts and calls," began life a poor boy. He was born in Oneida cour.ty, New York August 4. 1 8 1 6. His father, Henry Sage, was a laborer and unable to give Russell more than a meagre . education. At the age of nine he was thrown upon his own resources and went to Troy in search of employment. After a succession of hard ships common to the boys of the street he secured a place in a grocery store. After a few years of earnest work he rose in the estimate of his employers, and at the age of 20 was given a position of trust. In 1859 he entered business for himself. About the same time he married Miss Anna Carman, daughter of one of the rich men of Troy. At that time, also, Mr. Sage took an active interest in the politics of Troy. In 1841 he was elected an alderman, which office he held until 1848. He also served seven years as county treasurer. In his early life Mr. Sage was an ardent Whig politically and was elected to congress as a representative of that party in 1 853 and served until 1857. He was the first on the floor of congress to advocate the purchase of Mount Vernon by the govern ment. Mr. Sage's first venture in railroad and financial circles was as a director and associated with Thurlow Weed in the Hudson & Mohawk railroad running from retire- ew York and entered Wall street as a spec ulator. He was thejnventor of the scheme of selling privilages or "puts and calls" At the same time he became interested in railroads and secured stock in western lines notably Milwaukee and St. Paul of which he was president and vice-president for twelve years. By disposing of these investments as the smaller roads became absorbed by trunk lines he rapidly became wealthy. In later years he was closely associated with Gould in the management of the Wabash, St. Louis and Pacific, the Missouri Pacific, the Missouri, Kansas and the Texas, the Delaware Lackawanna and the St. Louis and San Francisco railroads the American Cable company and the Manhattan consolidated system of railroads in New York city in all of which corporations he served as a director i nuasun at muuawK raiuuau iuiiiuuk iiu J I Albany to Schnectady. Upon his retin I ment from congress he removed to Ne He was also a director in several banks. Mr. Saee had lived in New York but a few years when his wife died. The blow almost prostrated him and it was some time before he returned to the field of finance. For years he continued to devote his entire attention to business with neither wife nor children. Event ually he married Miss Marguerita Slocum who survives him. , Mr. Sage's great reputation was that of an economizer. He often declared that ten dollars was enough for any man to pay for a suit of clothes and that a 50 cent straw hat should be worn at least two seasons. And he religiously practic ed what he preached. He never smoked and his only stimulant in recent years was a thimbleful of whisky just before retiring. He had but one great hobby to own and drive fast roadsters. When his wife and physician persuaded him. after his serious illness in 1905. to grad ually relinguish the active management of his business, he could be seen every afternoon, save Sunday, driving behind a handsome pair of horses in Central park. The past few years he resided on Fifth Avenue opposite St. Patrick's cathedral. Previous to that he had lived for many years in an ordinary brown stone fron mansion on the avenue just above Forty- second street. Up to the time when he was fast ap proaching his ninetieth year Mr. Sage kept in his harness. All the stories told about his taking no vacation, having ro days off." working on holidays as business days, were true.
