The friends of Henry M. Paul, professor of mathemat ics, are making a preliminary campaign it) his behalf anticipation of the retire ment in February, 1 908, of Edward K. Rwson, the head of the department of English and law at the Naval Academy. Pfofessor Paul is one of the best known ftlcers of his corps, and was for a long time on duty in the bureau of yards and locks as an expert in ventilation and heating, and as such had charge of the specifications relating to those features of the buildings erected at navy yards and stations. H has been on duty at the Nayal Academy for a year or more, and is eminently fitted to succeed to the place at thf head of the department of English and -law, in which Professor Rawson has attained considerable distinction. i : - EASTERN TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP (Hcrlppa News Association) Longwood Mass., July 23 The six teenth annual tournament in singles ar.d the championship of the East for Tennis doubles began this morning on the courts of hs Longwood Cricket Club. Jn many cities the celebration of the 'anniversary, the exact date of which is July 22, is hsld today. New York July 23 The Belgians of the city are celebrating the anniversary Belgium's independence. Yesterday many of the Belgian societies had outings and meetings in honor of the anniversary and this evening several banquets will be held, at which the event will be officially celebrated.'; AMERICAN ENGINEERS IN LONDON (Hrrlppe tews Association) Londoe, July 23. The party of Ameri can mining engineers which came from the United States to attend the annua meeting of the Iron and Steel Institute of Great Britain, arrived here today and was hospitably received by a committee of the British Institute. The joint sessions will begin tomorrow and will last three days. Tomorrow evening a reception in honor of the visiting engineer will be giv en by the Lord Mayor at the Mansion House. (Id BRITTAIN CANNOT BE FOUND The search for Cecil Brittaw has to all practical purposes come to an end. most or the posses disbanding today and the dogs were taken off the trail. The kidnapping theory has now been accepted and the sheriff ie working on that hypothesis. From the telephone report last night the kidnapping of the boy is blamed to family troubles. It seems that Mrs. Brit tain has been married once before, and having secured a divorce from the firt husband, whose name could not be ascer tained, was married to her present hus band, Mr. Britain. The report goes on to state that they now suspect strongly that Mrs. Britain's first husband has taken the boy simply to even up his score against her, knowing full well that it wa the best way of making her suffer. It is said that he was seen around the Toll gate before the disappearance. of the child, but since then he is no where to be found, although they have tried to do so.
