Bohnenkamp gave a pretty "Patriotic Party" Tuesday even ing complimentary to Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Causey. The rooms w'ere decorated in flags and roses in profusion. During the evening high live was played ana prizes were awarded to Mesdames Grady and Watts also Messrs Bartlett, CaMsey and Crawford. Afterwards an eleb 'rated lunch was served in the dining rooms. Miss Verola Sieffer. Blanch Houx, i aura Nills, Messers D. Wright Ray Gibson, and Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Anderson were Cove citizens who celebrated the Fourth in La 3rande. Mr. and Mrs. L. M. Jensen returned list evening from Manti, Utah where they have been visiting friends the past month. Mr. Jensen says than conditions in Manti are good, but thU he returns to the Grande Ronde Vally better satisfied than ever. Those who attended the Fourth at Elgin all came home well satisfied and report having witnessed an interesting and profitable celebration. Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Camphell and daughter arrived last evening from the Lustus Indian Territory and left today for the home of their son Roy Campbell, who lives out in the valley. They will .spend the summer months visiting in and near La Grande. Mr. T. L. Williams, one of our best known young men was married Saturday evening at the home of the bride's parents to Miss Stella Baker, in Eugene. They returned this rooming to make La Grande their permanent home. It goes without saying that Mi. William's friends will give his young bride such a royal reception that she will soon learn to call La Grande home in its fullest sense. Clyde Rupert who has the contract for rebuilding the O. R. & N. track was in the city yesterday celebrating with La Grande friends. Mr. Rupert is a well known athletic having played with the Multnomah football team last season and has also held an important position with the Willamette baseball league. He assist ed the La Grande boys to defeat Hun- nington. He says that his contract work is progrts a j nicely. But that he is some wnai nandicap (or the want of men and teams. His address is Meacham. INJURED THIS MORNING A man man who gives Jiis name as George Foster is now lying in the Blue Mountain Hotel in a critical condition as a result of an accident which he sustained abiut eight o'clock this morning Just how it happened is more a surprise more than any thing else but it is evident that he was trying to get out of town on a freight car and got caught between the timbers He is badly injured internally in the region, of his a Lc.cn. tn ar.d is suffering very much. He admits that he was making his way to Portland but says he has no nome. He appears lo be near seventy years of age but even at that advanced age he has traveled far and he handles his hands and feel like a man of forty Yesterday noon he was seen about the city and by eight had accumlated a large amount of "Booze." He i almost of a perfect physique and resembles a prize fighter -more than a tramp. The extent of the injuries are not exactly know n but unless a relapse occurs h" will no doubt recover. AN EXPLANATION To the many friends, who so-goner- ously helped me in the contest and who wished me to take the mattef up with the Oregonian, for an explanation as to why I was not included as one of the maids of honor, of whom they sent five, as none of the five so honored received as many votes as I did and two of the five was defeated by a larger - number of votes than 1 was, I desire to submit the follow ing correspondence regarding the matter between myself' and the Oregonian. I wish to say however that 1 was defeated fairly and had no maids of honor been selected that I would gracefully, submit, but as will be noted from the following facts and correspondence 1 think myself and friends have not been treated with justice. The letter bearing date, of April 2, shows that I applied for transportation, while the letter of June 22, declares that never made application nor received transportation, which was given my.com peitor and which I was rightly entitled to VOTES RECEIVED. Cled Smith of Portland, received 112.152 defeated 86,170; Lulu Leverett. Golden dale, ree'd 121.250, defeated 5753; Ger trude Randall, Castle Rock, ree'd 1 12, 465 defeated 9147; Mary McCormick. Leconon, ree'd 123,689, defeated 41,058 Anna Ewing Oswego, ree'd 1 22.605, de feated 32.991. I, received 1 29,048 votes and was de feated by 40.496. As will be een above I received more than any of the five and was defeated by a smaller number than two. 1 have ask ed the Oregonian why I was left out in the face of the above conditions and the following is the reply.
