Hays returned from Spokane last evening where he has been visiting with relatives the past few days. Wednesday evening will be social night for the Eastern Star. The members all know what this means. Mrs. W. A. Wise of Portland, wife of Dr. Wise will arrive in the city today to spend a few days seeing Grande Ronde valley. Mr. Richard Rennick, of Bradford llli nois.and Mrs. E. A. Mitchell of Union are guests at the Mrs. Mary Mitchel home. Ticket agent E. C. Moore, is taking a vacation and Joe Keeney of the Freight office is filling the position at the ticket office. Mrs. H. J. Hockenberry and her sister. Miss Huffman have returned home. Mrs. Hockenberry has been visiting her sons at llwaco and Portland and Miss Huffman has been visiting her sister Mrs.Qalbreath at Los Angeles. Mr. W. A. McDonnell, of Cove, was a La Grande visitor yerterday. He has, with Mr. A. S. Wilkinson purchased the Cove Livery Stable and will personally conduct the same under the name of the dsn Liv ry Stable. He wilt endeavor to treat the public in a manner to give ion. W. L. Brenholtz, assistant cashier of the La Grande National bank, and Mrs. Brenholtz are planning to leave tonight for St. Anthony Idaho. There they will meet a brother of Mr. Brenholtz and the party will travel bv stage from there to the Yellowstone Pajjt They expect to remain three weeks. The railroad picnic, planned fpr August first has not reached any diffinite plans. The boys are undecided as to where they will go. Some want to go to Baker and others to Kamela. Wherever they do go there will be a good time insured for them. A fare of one dollar for the round trip has been granted regardless where the picnic is to be held. HOLD-UP HEARING POSTPONED The preliminary hearing of the interest ed parties in the sensational "Loving hold up" made last Saturday night, was postponed from this afternoon till seven o'clock tonight, by Justice of the Peace Hough. Her death was not unexpected as she had been in ill health for some time. The fun eral arrangements cannot be definitely announced until relatives can be com municated with. Telegrams announcing her death have been forwarded, but at this time no replies have been received. Mr. Scriber and family have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community. Re'illy celebrated the third anniversary of his election as Bishop of the Baker City diocesi, which contains an area of 6000 square miles with a Catholic population of 4000 with nine parishes in charge of as many priests. WOULD PARDON LUCY A petition has been presented to the governor for the pardon of Wm Lucy, and a strong protest is also being made to the petition by parties who say that he is a bad man and should be compelled to serve the full term. Lucy is serving a ten-years' sentence in the penitentiary for the killing of Ernest HickmaiFi Preirie City, in 1905.
