Forty years ago. Pacific University at Forest Grove, Willamette University at Salem, and the Baptist col ege at McMinnville offered something more than what we now mean by a high school course, and, although they had pre tentious names, they were not nearly rat they are now. At present, those institutions. Pacific College at Newburg the Agricultural College at Corvallis. the the State University at Eugene, Mount Angel College in Marion county, the Pres byterian College at Albany, Columbia University near Portland, nine institutions in all offer collegiate education to the young men and women of the Willamette valley, not to mention the Normal School a'; Monmouth, the Portland Academy, St. Helen's Hall, and other secondary schools that dot that part of our state. There is now no necessity for a young man or ycun '.vcmzri, dosiricj? s rnr!f education, to leave the Willamette valley in quest of it. The schools are near his or her door. How is it in Eastern Ore gon? We are fifty years behind the Will amette valley in this respect! Tnere is not in all Eastern Oregon an insti'ution f learning capable of conferr ing the degree of B. A. or B S. East ern Oregon comprises more than two-thirds of the territorial area of the entire state, and this part of the state is rich in na tural resources, and is growing in popula tion and wealth quite as fast as any other part of Oregon, and it seems to me and to maiy that steps should be taken to procure for this part of the state an in stitution of learning of the first rank. This portion of the state has for many years done its part toward the support of the Stats University at Eugene, the Agricul tural College, and the Normal School at Monmouth. Those institutions are in the heart of Western Oregon. But the state has done about nothing for Eastern Ore gon in respect to higher education. It seams to me that the time is at hand for something to be done. In our northern sister. Washington, her State University is in the Western part of of that state but an excellent State College is located at Pullman in the Eastern part of that state. This last named institution has a department of agriculture, but it is also a first class college, and it has a very large attendance. Now, Eastern Oregon is en titled to have what Eastern Washington already possesses, a first class college, with free tuition to all residents of the state. We are entitled to th e. Western Oregon has three large institutions sup ported either wholly or principally by the stale. We arj entitled to one such insti tution at least, and now is tne time to begin the contest to obtain it. Tnere are a few academies in this part of the state that are doing good work, but we must have something more than this. We want and must have an insti tution of the rank, where students can obtain degrees that mean something and they need not be ashmed of. Eastern Oregon has an eligible site for such an institution of learning, the title to which is in the state. I refer to that excellent tract of state land, adjoining Union, wnich was purchased for a site for a branch asylum. The land is ample and in every way an excellent site for a state college. It is possible that the consti tution may need amending, so as to allow state institutions to be located elsewhere than at Salem. However, the state uni versity, the agricultural college and the different "normal" sthools have been located far from Salem are supported either wholly or princiqally by the state. The people will vote to amend the consti tution in this respact whenever they are permitted to. As the state owns an ex cellent site at Union, this is the place for the coming state college. It will be worth several county seats to that beautiful little city. If the county seat were remov ed from Eugene that place would scarcely feel the effect of the loss, but if the state unniversity were taken away from it, that beau if ul town, the gem of the upper Willamette, would be greatly and pei manently injured. A good State college at Union would be of great benifit to all Eastern Ooegon. but it would benefit most that portion of Oregon nearest the college. New England surpasses other parts of the United Stats in giving her children college educations, and this is chiefly due to the fact that institutions of higher learning are near by. and it is not necessary to send their sons and daughters great distances to college. It will take soma time to bring about ocation of a good college at Union, and, hence, the agitation should be begun with out delay. A good state college, with an agricultural department at Union, would be thronged with students and it would do incalculable good. There is danger that the state may sell the land at Union and. if it should do so. it would then be much more difficult than it is now to obtain jus tice for Eastern Oregon in this matter of higher education. .
