She is th only woman who wat ever raised to th peerage in recognition of her many act of charity and her public spirit. She is th daughter of Sir Fran cis Burdett, M. P. and th granddaughter of Thomas Coutts. th great banker. Her vast fortune is derived from th Coutts bank in which eh is still a partner. She declined all offer of marriage until she wa sixty-eight year old, when h married Sir William Ashmead. who wa then only thirty yar old.
