' BARONESS BURDfTT IS 8
(Scrip ps New Association)
London, April 21 Barones Burdett-
Coutts, probably th world' greatest
philanthropist, is celebrating her ninety
second birthday today, During th four
score and twelve years of her life she ha
given away mor than $25,000,000 for
charitabl purposes and many of th
most important charitabl institution in
th United Kingdom owe their existence
and prosperous condition to her munifi
cence. She is th only woman who wat
ever raised to th peerage in recognition
of her many act of charity and her public
spirit. She is th daughter of Sir Fran
cis Burdett, M. P. and th granddaughter
of Thomas Coutts. th great banker. Her
vast fortune is derived from th Coutts
bank in which eh is still a partner. She
declined all offer of marriage until she
wa sixty-eight year old, when h
married Sir William Ashmead. who wa
then only thirty yar old. Th marriage
which wa strongly disapproved of by
Queen Victoria, proved a vary happy on,
contrary to general expectations. Th
