While there may be mora or less specu lation as to many of the nominations, there Is no question as to the nomination on the Republican ticket for the offices of clerk, recorder and treasurer and their re-election la Just as certain as (heir nomination, AMIIuSTRaIITS ROTK Notice is hereby given that the under signed has been duly appointed by the County Court of the State of Oregon for Union County, administratrix of the estate of Herman C. West deceased. All persons having claims against said estate are hereby required to present the same properly verified as by law required, to Wm. B. Sargent, my attorney, Foley Hotel Block. La Grande, Oregon, within six months from the date hereof. STRUT IMPROVEMENT NOTKf Be it resolved, That the sidewalks on K Street between Second Street and Fourth Street, in the city of La Grande. Oregon, shall be put in good repair by the abutting property owners and such repairs shall be made by the 20th day of April, 1 906. 'Passed by the council of the city of La Grande, Oregon, on the 4th day of April A. D. 1906. I.R. Snook. Recorder of the city of La Grande. It appear that the state of Oregon is to be "presented" with a "gold brick" in the shape of the old Barlow toll road. That is the people are to be asked to vote on the proposition to purchase the same for $24,000. The road is little short of a right of way, and before June the voter should investigate before voting authority for the state to purchase. On week from tomorrow the voters will be put to the test. For year they have clamored for political freedom from the bosses. Now they have it but it re main to be teen whether they are will ing to do the thinking for themselves. The primary law places absolute dicta tion aa to party nomination and if the people turn out and participate in the primaries the result will be satisfactory and there will be no opportunity to raise the hue and cry that the present system ie not the thing we want There will be an effort to restore the old system if there is the least possible chance. The way to prevent this is to roll up a large vote at the primaries. A WORD OF FAITH Nothing is more safe, and what the present wave of investigation, everywhere in America, i doing, i to encourage people to think, and to give them the information on which to base their thought and make it real. Instead of being told less, they need to be told inde finitely more. The revolution through which we are passing is from names and shibboleths to realities and human interests, from party symbols and the big bow-wow to close dealing witn what con cerns us most Individuals will be wronged, There will be scapegoats, and every injustice will be so much of an obstacle to the onward movement but the onward movement will proceed. The passing over to the people of the facts about politics, business, and health is a necessary part of government of, by and for the people. The energy with which the natural resources of the country have been developed now sees another task, of no lesser volume of importance, waiting to be met and the men of America will not atop before the great constructive work is thoroughly and radically carried to success.
