Pollock, proprietor of the Citv Hotel is in the city to day transacting business from Elgin. Mrs. G. B. Stoddard and two children left this morning for Baker City to remain a few days visiting friends and relatives. Wm. Shaw, of Elgin, is in the city to day transacting buoiness. - Mr. Shaw and Mr. John Hanmack, have opened a cigar factory in Elgin. Geo. McCabe of Elgin, who has been awarded the contract for building the O. K. & N. tracks out of Elgin, went to Portland last evening. Mr. and Mrs. Collinsworth. who have been visiting brothers and nistan nf Union and La Grande for the past two weeks, left this morning for their home in Joseph. W. I. Dishman, manager of G. M. & S. Co. store at Elgin passed through the' city this morning en route home from Los Angeles where he has been spending the winter. Mrs. Dishman and children will not return before April 16th. The Ladies Aid Society of the M. E church will meet Saturday afternoon at two thirty at the parsonage. All the members and f riends of the church are requested to be present. Mrs. A. E. Jones, President Mr, and Mrs. Fred Bock, and Mr Chester Newlin left this morning for Old" Mexico, where they expect to make their future home. Mr. Bock and Mr. Newlin will engage in the sugar cane business. Mr. Waldon, the officer on duty, called at this office this afternoon and stated that he had been called to the saloon about 1:16 o'clock which he believe was about ten minutes after the man had been taken off the street to the saloon;': JDIED J. H. McQuire died at Hot Lake last night of Bright' s disease and was brought to La Grande today and placed in the undertaking establishment of Henry & Carr. The body will be shipped to the home of his family at Seattle tonight Deceased was a stock buyer, and had just shipped a load of horses which he bought in the vacinity of this city. He was taken seriously ill at Hot Lake and died soon after. Mrs. McQuire passed through the city last night enroute to Seattle.
