Santa Rota. Cal March 25. Kirt trite
morning destroyed the heart of the busi
ness section of this city as well as several
frame buildings, which includes the
Masonic temple and the Armory. ' The
Greening stables with five horses, and
some poultry was also destroyed. While
trying to rescue Mr. and Mrs. Iron, who
were asleep in the rear of their store, two
firemen narrowly escaped burning as the
result of sudden collapse of the roof. The
rescuer with the inmates crawled, out of
debris, The city records were removed
from the City hail, aa it was thought
impossible to save the city building, but no
serious damage was done to the struc
ture.

TWENTY BODIES RECOVERED

Philippine W. Va, Mar. 23 Twenty
bodies have so far been recovered from
the Century mine, and eleven are known
to still remain In the mine. Considering
the fact that over one hundred miners
were in the mine at the time of the ex
plosion, it is remarkable that the loss of
life was not much greater. The explosion
was caused by coal dust igniting. The
dead are mostly Poles and Hungarians.

TREES INJURED
Freewater, Ore., March. 23 Mr.
Onspaugh cam in from his ranch in the
Hudson Bay district, about nine miles
from the city, yesterday for supplies. He
says in that section fruit is not only killed,
but he is afraid that many trees will be
ruined by the recent cold weather.

strike, the Steel Company are willing tc
pay the additional cost of mining under
the 1903 seal but a number of indepen
dent operators will not agree to the prop

Seattle, March 23. Louis P. Ydee, a
wood chopper near Ballard, found a
decomposed substance in the' woods,
which bethought was particles of precious
stone. On Sunday he put a quantity
into a pan, added quicksilver, and placed
it on the stove. The fumes made the
entire family sick, three little oirls sari
ously. Louise, aire six. died this morninu In
great agony. The physicians are working
hard to sav the others whose bodies
have turned purple and are vomiting fre
quently. ; .
