If we can absorb such an annual flood of people without economic disturbance it will be a marvel, but we have witnessed wonders in the past . In the eleven years. 1894 to and including 1905. the immigra tion'to the United States was six million the absorption of which has created no great disturbance. The course of the University of Cali fornia in dropping from its rolls 200 students who had failed to show at examination that they had either ambition or capacity, should be adopted by other colleges. It is a notice to dullards and idlers to betake themselves elsewhere. - It asserted that the tuition fees of no American university are large enough to bear the cost of instruction. Every college student, therefore, however rich. is largely a recipient of charity. Hence no student has a right to use the college community as a loafing place, occupying the time of the instructors and distracting the attention of the students. Too many attend college for a good time to exercise at all the college games and amusements, to the eclipse of the princi pal object.
