PREACHING TO THE I 0L1T
"Don't be afraid ol giv'V;
If your bfa ain't worth nothia' to other
tO'HS,
Why. what's the use of nviri'!"
And that's what 1 say to my wife; says I.
There s Brown, the miser ble sinner.
He'd sooner a beggar would starve, than
give .
A cent toward buyin' a dinmr."
I tell you our minister's prime, he is;
' But I couldn't quite determine.
When I heard him givin' itng'it and left,
Just who was hit by his sermon.
Of course, there couldn't be n mistake
When he talked of lone-winded prayin ,
For Peters and Johnson they S3t and
scowled
At every word he was sayin.
And the minister then went on to say:
There s various kinds of ca latin .
And religion's as good for evey day
As it is to bnnff to meetm -
I don't think much of that ma I that gives
The loud amens at my preaJiin ,
And spends his time the followin' week
In cheatin and overreachin . i -
I guess that dose was bitter enough
For a man like Jones to swaller.
For I noticed he didn't open b i mouth.-
Not once, after that, to holl.r;
'Hurrah," says I, "for the mir. stor" '
Of course I said it quiet
"Give us some more of this opm talk;
Its very refreshin diet.
The minister hit 'em every tine;
And when he spoke of fashun.
And riggin' out in bows and Ui rigs.
As woman s ruim passion.
And comin' to church to see th styles.
I couldn t helD a-winkm
And a-nudgin my wife; and scrs I:
- "That s you.
And I guess it sot her to thhkin.'

The course of the University of Cali
fornia in dropping from its rolls 200
students who had failed to show at
examination that they had either ambition
or capacity, should be adopted by other
colleges. It is a notice to dullards and
idlers to betake themselves elsewhere. - It
asserted that the tuition fees of no
American university are large enough to
bear the cost of instruction. Every
college student, therefore, however rich.
is largely a recipient of charity. Hence
no student has a right to use the college
community as a loafing place, occupying
the time of the instructors and distracting
the attention of the students. Too many
attend college for a good time to
exercise at all the college games and
amusements, to the eclipse of the princi
pal object.
