La Grande girls are the champions.

remembered as the best basket ball
game ever witnessed in this city.
While the La Grande team was , vict
orious, it must not be thought that the
victory was an easy one, for such was
not the case. The Baker City girls were
ball players, every one of them, and it
was only by means of careful play and
good generalship that the La Grande
girls were able to win.
La Grande scored three points before
the visitors in dainty red sui ts seemed to
realize that the game was on, ' but as
soon as they began to set up and take
notice there was a change in the aspect
of the game and it was the home guards
who began to look around and observe.
The first half closed with the girls in
blue slightly in the lead. The fact did
discourage the visitors who seemed un
shaken in their belief that the second
half would finish with the difference in
their favor. In this they were doomed to
disappointment, for at the end of the
second half the score card bore evidence
of the fact that honors were even. ' This
condition of affairs was not to be tolerat
ed by either team and it was decided to
continue the game and settle the cham
pionship if it took all night
Two more determined teams never
lined up. Things were doing soon. Each
team knew the strength of the other, but
each hoped to discover some weakness
in the other and thereby secure the
coveted point For a time neither was
able to secure an advantage, but finally
by a splendid exhibition of generalship
and shrewd calculation the oval ; was
placed in the basket and the equilibrium
of the score sheet was destroyed, and the
La Grande High School girls has secured
the championship, .

Edwin W. Devine filed his petition to
day in the clerk's office as a- candidate
before the Republican primaries for the
office of county commissioner. Mr.
Devine resides on Ladd creek.

Edward Kinsey, craveung salesman for
the Oregon Furniture Company of Port
land, left this morning for Elgin on a
business trip. This is the first time in
three years that Mr. Kinsey has visited
this city.
Mr. D. I. Peters of San Franc's:o ar
rived in the city Saturday and has ac
cepted a position with A. V. And ew,
the tailor. Mr. Peters is a firsWclass
cutter and fitter Mr. Andrews feels triat
he is very fortunate in having been able
to secure his services.
Engineer eo. Parker is down from
Pleasant Valley for a few days and ex
pects to return this evening. It has been
several months since he was down and
he is kept busy shaking hands with his
many mends. .
W. Jiggers, now located at
Portland, arrived in the city yesterday.

Frank A. Reed, who was operated upon
'or appendicitis some time ago, has passed
the danger period and will' soon be re
moved to the home of his patents in .Old
Town from Mrs. Stover's under whose
care he has been. ' .

J The court excused the jurors for today
there would be - no jury cases. To
morrow the case of the state vs W. J.
Hunter, who is charged with the larceny
of a mare, alleged to be the property of
S. O; Swackhammer which was disposed
of in the vicinity of Summerville. .
. The jury'in. the case of Wm. Grant vs
Hardy Harrold brought in a verdict for
$1560, for the plaintiff, being the amount
sued for as a commission for selling his
firm.
The case occupying the attention of
thi eour. today is W. A. Gassett vs the
O. R. & 14. wherein the plaintiff sued tne
company for injuries received in this
county last August asking damages in
the sum of $7,000. .'
