An aged, gray-haired and very wrink
led old woman, arrayed in the outlandish
calico costume of the mountains, was
summoned as a witness in court to tell
what she knew about a fight in her house.
She took the witness stand with evidence
of backwardness and proverbial Bourbon
verdancy. The judge asked her in a
kindly voice what took place. She in
sisted it did not amount to much, but the
judge by hie persistency finally got her to
tell the story of the bloody fracas.
' Now, I tell ye, Jedge, it didn't amount
to nothin'. The fust I knowed about . it
was when Bill Saunders' called Tom
Smith a liar, en Tom knocked him down
with a stick o' wood. One o1 Bill's friends
then cut Tom with a knife, slicirt' a big
chunk out o' him. Then Sam Jones, who
was a friend of Tom's, shot the other
feller and two more shot him, en three or
four others got cut right smart by some
body. That nachly caused some excite-,
ment, jedge, en then they commenced
fightin' .

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL
Pendleton high school will have one of
the fastest amateur baseball teams in
the state this year. Already light prac
tice has been indulged in, but by the first
of the week Manager Slater hopes to
have his team out for good, earnest prac
tice every night after school.
Manager Slater has written challenges
to The Dalles. Baker City. La Grande,
union. Colfax, Walla i Walla, Athena,
Whitman, Columbia College and other
places.

said, of digesting something like
a thousand times its own weight
of edible substances.
Now, the reason back of these
facts is that the juice of the pine
apple contains an "entyrii," a iw
-lea of ferment, which attacks flu
beefsteak or other food and dinor
gnniies it. It is such an extreme
ly powerful ferment that, acting
much in the.same way as pepsin, if
will, in the course of a few hours,
cause the substauce upon' which
it works to dissolve and melt
away. The name "bromelin" has
been given to it by science.
It Is extremely easy to separatr
the digestive principle from th
pineapple Juice. All you have to
do is to take some of the Juice and
dissolve a tablespoonful or so ol
common table salt in it. Thi

to fall to the bottom of the,
receptacle, when it may b
'asily separated. A good
!ied pineapple will contain more
han a pint of juice a quantity
vhich is amply sufficient to help
