Holman RAIID IS -OUT FOR Baker City, Jaa. 31. State Senator John L. Rand of Baker City, yesterday formerly announced himself a candidate for the republican nomination for congress from the Second Oregon district' He will file his nominating petitions and declara tion of Intention to become a candidate within a few days. QUEER CANDIDATE Daily Register: " Every little while a candidate floats into Eugene. Dr. Withy combe, who would give his best Jersey cow to get his feet n o M . G lam'iarlaln' 'roes, was here yesterday. It's hard to understand how Mr. Withycombe ex pacts support when he is ready to state boldly and with u r Sjrve his opinion on a ly public ques-ion. . If you wane m views on any topic you can obtain them by asking for them. ' He is a man with opinions and, it is conceded, able ones. Perhaps after all, he is just ' the man who will emerge from the primary elect ion with votes to spare. It would be no surprise. His canvass s'iows him to em body the principles for which the pr.- nary law was framed declaration of principles; nothing to conceal. TRIBUTE TO NEWSPAPERS Speaking of what a newspaper does for community. United States Senator Davis of Illinois, made an address that remains ever green in we memories oi newspaper men. He said: "Every year every local paper gives from 50 to 5000 free lines forth benefit of the community in which it is located. No other agency can or will do this. The editor in proper- "Jon to his means does more for hi towr than any other man. He ought to bt supported, not because you happen tt like him or admire his writing the best but because a local paper is the best In vestment a community can make. NARROW ESCAPE Baker City Jan. 30. Frozen water caused the kitchen range in the residence of Robt Palmer, at the corner of third and Place streets, to explode ' about 1C o'clock Sunday morning but luckily there was no one in the room at the time ano .10 personal injuries resulted. When the explosion occurred Mr. anc Mrs. Palmer were in another portion o. .he house. From the manner in whicl the iron is scattered about the room it ;an be plainly seen that if anyone had oeen in the room at the time an accident and probacy a fatality would have re sulted. PECULIAR CAMPAIGN Hon. W. M. Cake of Portland, who wat n the city yesterday, when asked as U' the political situation in Portland, gave i wise look, smiled and said: ' You know this new primary law ii something peculiar unto itself. The pres- jnt campaign is anybody s race for any thing that anybody wants. No one ca. predict the outcome. I think the race foi governor will be very close at the prim arieson the Republican ticket. Hanford is one of the emi nent American players who have had no complaint to o.Ter as to the reception of sincere artiste endeivor by the play gon.g public. ' His life has been devoted to an earnest and consistent determina tion to meet the public demand for the" best that can be had in a play, cast and scenic equ pment For his author Mr. Hanford has felt that k is useless to at tempt to improve upon Shakespeare, and with scant exception his plays havo al ways been those wiich traditionally figure in the repertory of a Shakespearian star. He has contributed some of the most em nsntly approved representations that the modern stage has witnessed, and by his extraordinary gifts as a reader has reliev ed roles which were too often performed witn solemn and stilted affectation, oi every trace of pedantry. He has effected CJmbinations of stars which permitted productions on a far more elaborate scale than would otherwise have been possible and has maintained his subsequent indi vidual productions on the same high stan jams man wmuiuiiw.- no ! . th: satisfaction of guiding the ambitions of a number of axtors who have since found t secure footing in popular appioval. Mr. Hantord's most distinguished protege if fliss Mane Drofnah. who n the past few seasons h s made her way to a nigh ano permanent place in the affections of play goers wno esteem thj womanly woinei of the stage. Mr. Frank Hennig is a actor who has for years been a member if Mr. Hanford's company and who dur ng that period has given performance that has won him applause from coast ti ioast. The date of Mr- Hanford's en gagement in this city is. Saturday. Feb.? ind the play to be presented at Steward's opera house will be "Th Taming of thi Shrew." TWO CAME WARDENS The closed season on ducks, wild gees, ind swan commences today and in jus ;ice to the hunting public it might be wel. for them to know that at the present jme there are two state deputy gamt warden appointed for this county and . h is their intention to enforce the law to tht letter. The largest ranch deal in Fergus County's history, sc. far as the amount involved is concerned, was a day or two ago, when John Quincy Adams and his brother, of Chicago. 111. and Spencer, la., purchased the Walter imith, John Shea and N. A. Lewis ranch s, near the Judith river, for approximate ly $60,000. The Great Northern survey runs through the Lewis ranch, and it if surmised the purchasers intend to start a town there. When the first sign appears in the form of an insig-f niucant sore or ulcer, few persons realize that the deadly virus has entered; the blood; but so potent is the poison that one drop will vitiate and pollute: the purest and healthiest blood, and in a short time the degrading and hor-J riUe symptoms begin to appear. The mouth and throat ulcerate, the glands! in the neck and groins swell, the hair and eye-brows fall out, copper-colored i spots apjiear on the body, and in the latter stages of the disease the poison; even works down and destroys the bones.
