All fussy over the attitude of a number of of west ern states, including Washington and Ore gon, in regard to the protection of fishes. Commissioner George M. Bowers, of the Bureau of Fisheries, has set out to teach those states a lesson that they ought to know. He would be happy if Secretary Metcalf of the ; department of commerce and labor, under whose supervision the fisheries bureau comes, would follow his advice to discontinue all government fish ery work in those states that "exhibit no healthy sentiment in favor of the preser votion of their supply of food and game fishes." There are a few other punitive measures he would take in spanking the western states. California has been very thoughtful, the commissioner believes, in its provision to insure ine Mitinipo.ii u i.itritiin various species, particularly salmon. But Oregon and Washington! He speaks of the curtailing of the "already too short closed seasons" on the Columbia and other rivers, by the erection of impassable dams in streams that salmon are wont to ascend to spawn, and by the "unrestrict ed operation of fishing devices in locali ties, where they are known to be unnecess arily destructive.". A pernicious example of the unrestrict ed operation", says he, "is the multiplica tion of pound nets and gill nets about the mouth of the Skagit river on Puget Sound, notwithstanding the well-known facts that it is the only stream in that region in which there is a noteworthy run of blueback or sock-eye salmon for spawn ing purposes, and that the only hatchery operated chiefly for this species is locat ed on Baker Lake, at the head of that stream. The present indications are that the Baker Lake hatchery may shortly have to be abandoned, because the run of fish will have been annihilated," THE TIME OF THEIR LIVES The following letter from the Hon. J. W. McAllister will give an idea how California tourist the turist trade. There is some good food for reflection here. Paradina. Cal. This is as far as we have heard from the program. I assure you wa are enjoying every hour of the time. Yours truly John McAlister MRS. DAVID HAWES Charlotte A. Nelson was born near Peru, Indiana, On January 12, 1853 she was married to David Hawes. A year after marriage. Mr. and Mrs. Hawes moved to Mo., and after one year spent there moved to Franklin county, Iowa, where they lived three years. From there they went to Nemaha county. Neb., where they spent eighteen happy years. In 1882 they came to Pendleton, Oregon, and four years later to Hilgard, where - the last twenty years were spent. Mrs. Hawes departed this life January 12, 1906, aged 6? years and 6 months. leaving her aged husband, two sons, three daughters, a number of grand children, besides loving friends to mourn her absence. SistsrHawes was a member of the Central Church of Christ of this city. Though seldom able to attend services she was interested in the work. She re joiced to attend our little meetings at Hilgard and her house was the preacher's home. A faithful woman has gone from our midst. May her loving life and good ex ample be a help to many. "Death was fast approaching." writes Ralph F. Fernandez, of Tampa, Fla., de scribing his fearful race with death, "as a result of liver trouble and heart dis ease, which had robbed me of sleep and of all interest in life. 1 had tried many dif ferent doctors and several medicines, but got no benefit, until 1 began to use Elec tric Bitters. So wonderful was their ef fect, that in three days I felt like a new man, and today 1 am cured of all my troubles." Guaranteed at Newlin's Druir N. B. Truth. St. Paul. June, 51. '08. I've lived so long. I. remember well when the Mississippi was a brook. Mv good health and long life came by taking Hollister's Rocky Mountain Tea. 35 The western states might take a little more care of fish . In streams that feed irrigation flumes. In some states, the commissioner says, the destruction cf fish life from this cause, has already be come serious. Well informed persons have told him that extinction in the near future is the natural outcome of the course pursued by state officials of Mon tana. The Commissioner, in event that Montana and other states do not look after their own fish, will urge 'Congress to pass a law requiring some contrivance to be placed at the head of ditches to frighten fishes away from the intake and prevent their being washed out upon the land to die. And right now is the time that the bureau has in mind doing so many things for the Pacific coast. Among these is continued efforts to acclimate the eastern !-K.f.r tn the Pacific conditions. No other fishery product of the eastern seaboard would be such a boon, the commissioner claims. H would plant large quantities in California, Oregon. Washington and Alaska. Commissioner Bowers says that during the last year the Pacific salmon were propogated in larger numbers than ever before, but the work on the Columbia was discouraging. Commissioner .Bowers wants the state of California to transplant the golden trout from Volcano creek, now its only habitat, to surrounding streams. Presi dent Roosevelt some time ago asked the bureau to do something to save this fish of great beauty, gameness and delicious flavor, from extinction. In addition to the work mapped out for the state, the commissioner wants the United States to extend the limits of Mount Whitney Mili tary Reservation to include Volcano creek and to require that all fishing therein be prohibited for three years and. that there after Ibe size and number of catch be limited.
