Union county's development means La Grande's growth. The entire growth of the state means a greater Portland. WHAT IT MEANS To form an idea of the addition to the volume of business the addition if a thou sand new comers would make, the follow- ing figures from the United States statis tics will be helpful. The Department of Commence, Finance and Labor gave out that at wholesale prices on Nov. 1st,, 1 90S the cost for the necessities of life per year, per capita in the United States was for breadstuff s $18,033; for meats $8,441, for dairy and garden products $14,802, for other food $9,622. for cloth ing $18,839, for metals $16,689 and for miscellaneout articles $17,427,' total per capita cost of things consumed $103,853 per year! At the above rate an addition of one thousand to our population would mean the expenditure of $103,853 at whole sale prices for necessaries.
