La Grande holds the same relation to
Union county as "Portland does to the
entire state. Union county's development
means La Grande's growth. The entire
growth of the state means a greater
Portland.
WHAT IT MEANS
To form an idea of the addition to the
volume of business the addition if a thou
sand new comers would make, the follow-
ing figures from the United States statis
tics will be helpful. The Department of
Commence, Finance and Labor gave out
that at wholesale prices on Nov. 1st,,
1 90S the cost for the necessities of life
per year, per capita in the United States
was for breadstuff s $18,033; for meats
$8,441, for dairy and garden products
$14,802, for other food $9,622. for cloth
ing $18,839, for metals $16,689 and
for miscellaneout articles $17,427,' total
per capita cost of things consumed
$103,853 per year!
At the above rate an addition of one
thousand to our population would mean
the expenditure of $103,853 at whole
sale prices for necessaries.
THINKLETS
When the devil needs recruits he sends
out a flatterer with a muster-roll.
All the world loves a (over, butt all the
world seems to have it in for bridegrooms.
Criminals . usually give themselves
away before they give themselves up.
After having gone through two or three
engagements a girl begins to look shop
worn.
V
If a man were restricted to a diet of
angel food he would likely lose interest in
things heavenly.
ROBERT BURNS
.The Observer is glad that the admirers
of the great Scottish Bard are going to
celebrate the coming anniversary of that
greatest of poets Robert Burns. The
term gre itest is used advisedly. No poet
ever inspired mankind to as noble actions
and kind neighborly feeling as did Robert
Burns. V' ''
