L SMITH "One of the best meetings ever held," is the way President E. L. Smith, of the Northwest Fruitgrower's association, ex pressed himself today on the La Grande meeting of the association. which . closed ' last night Mr. Smith passed down the O. R. St N. today to his home in Hood River . after presiding at the meeting of the fruitgrow ers and is delighted wiih the success of the meeting. A large nu Tiber of promi nent fruitgrowers were in attendance and many valuable advances were made along practical lines. "Utah sent a strong delegation," said Mr. bmith. "and exhibited great interest ; I- t.m ...nrtatlnn and it mission and ad-;. rertised that state well at tne meeting oy ; showing the progress mads by that state along intelligent lines in fruitgrowing." The weather was delightful in Grande Ronde valley and the delegates had an opportunity to view si ma of the finest orchards in the state in the vicinity of La Grande. . Other prominent men from the west- em portion of ths state who attended the meeting were Dr. James ' Witycombe, of Corvallis, and T. T. Geer, of Salem, both candidates for the republican nomination for governor, and Colonel E. Hofer, editor of the Salem Journal, who addressed the convention last evening on the subject of strawberry culture. E fA(IS The cities make a better showing than the rural districts in the matter of illiter acy among children, according to federal census bulletin just issued. In the North Atlantic states, where the so-called cities country includes many large . towns or under 25,000, the proportions of child ilS - eracy in the city is 7.8 to the 1000 and in the country 10.8. In the South Atlantic . and . South Centra states the difference is very much more marked, and of . course in favor of the cities. The state in which there is the least illiteracy among children ten to 14 years of age (3.4 to the 10001 is Nebras ka. In a comparison confined to native white children Washington leads, with Connecticut a close second. All states show progress between 1890 and 1900 The bulletin very properly notes that the greater illiteracy in the country does not necessarily indicate that the regard for education is less here than in the city One cause of the difference is the difficulty of providing .school facilties for a scatter ed country population, and the develop ment of the school transportation system already inaugurated in many farming communities will tend to remove this dis advantage. "Death was fast approaching." writes Ralph F. Fernandez, of Tampa. Fla., de scribing his fearful race with death, "as a result of liver trouble and heart dis ease, which had robbed me of sleep and of all interest in life. 1 had tried many dif ferent doctors and several medicines, but got no benefit until I began to use Elec tric Bitters. So wonderful was their ef fect that in three days t felt like a new man, and today 1 am cured of all my troubles." Parker a young man about thirty years age. who has been working for Armour Balderston and Baker, railroad contractors at camp number one was de tected by a felbw employee in the act of stealing tobacco and clothing from the commissiary. Mr. Bilderston one of contractors swore out a warrant for his arrest and city marshal Christiansen took the alleged thief in custody. He was baled before Justice Goff and at the con clusion of his preliminary trial was bound over to the district court, his bonds being fixed at $200. THE OTHER SIDE We notice In the previous issue of the "Observer" a little squib coming from the pen of one of the esteemed members of the Commercial Club team which is in tended to leave the impression that the p. N. G. team is made up ' of a bunch of "rough house rowdies" whose only intent was rough work, knowing nothing what- ,ver of the game while he is a -little ,mh whoae renutatinn wnuld hatarniahed by tven eomin jn eontaot wan . Permit us to say that the 0. N. G. team wn coached to play a gentlemanly game and when the rough work was started by one in whose care is the teaching of young ladies and gentlemen, the boys of the Company were amazed. Although they don't claim to know all about the game as is the pretense of the Club coach, they do know when they are getting ths worst of it. The teaching of a soldier is when he is fought to fight back and when one of their members has his nose broken and another has a punch in the. sojar plexus it would be the general opinion that there must be some rough work by someone besides the "Militia." We have authority, that we deem as good as any man in the town who claims to bs a coach, that that was not a rough game. until after the two men were hurt This little explanation is entirely unnecessary i n a way but as the notice published yes terday might leave a wrong impression with some who were not there, but those who were lucky enough to see the affair know well enough that the rough play did not start with the 0. AN ACRE FOR THE BOY I believe in giving the boy or girl an acre or two of good land close to the house upon the understanding that I am to furnish trees, plants and seeds to stock ths plot and that he or she is first to supply the family with all the fruit and vegetables the family can use. and then havs the balance to sail to best advant age, the proceeds to be his or her own. This will serve to center the children's in terest in ths farm and the conviction will soon follow that thore is no place where a person can live as independent and pure a life as in the country. -rW. Lowall's lecture, 'Li w and Lawyers, Then and Now," as the second number on the Popular Course, was high ly appreciated last night by a large audience. The subject was deep and the speaker convinced his hearers that he had given much thought to thisbransh of the profession. Tne first pirt of the lecture dealt with . ths ancient law, descending to modern times. The latter part of the lecture, dealing with the methods of present day liwyers and his advice to young men contemplat'ng taking up that profession, was particularly instructive. The ad Iress in the mornin? at the school and the evening lecture w 11 certainly make Judge Loell beUer ap preciated by La Crania residents.
