,j JUDGf i 1. LOWfll ADDRESSES Hi Mil His Tlieme is "Sin$!g W m is Deliver ed in Masterly Manner to Appreciative . Audience. . - itephen A Lowell of Pendleton, who is 'he second lecture in the Popular CSJse at the Central Church of Christ, visited the publ'o schools this morning and addrassed an assembly of students in T. , L. Williams' room. Prof. J. M. Martin introduced Judge Lowell in a few words and he spoke for thirty minutes in an en tertaining manner. He said in part: 'The story is told of a German. Scotch man and Irishman banqueting together one day. In the course of the dinner out . of J;urtc:y the G:ss ? Mv man what nationality he would prefer to be if he were notai Scotchman".) He re replied, 'A German.' ' To repay the com ment the bcot asked the German what would rather be if he were not a Ger man. 'A Scotchman,' replied the Ger man. Then the German asked the Irish-1 man what h would be' if he We "not I irisn. , 'i wouid be a sham.sir replied the Irishman. And I would be a sham also were I not an American. To be an American and a trua American should be our endeavor. The responsibility is laid upon us to siow our patriotism as Amer1 leans and tj be loyal Oregoman and for the upbuilding of our state. I was educated in the schools of the 'jfitic coast and the public school I re iUa as next in importance to the church. . A public speaker, I have always regarded as a benefactor, for, once in my school career, the appearance of' a speaker caused me to miss a recitation. wm ceil you a secret. I was, once a school teacher and for the schools I have the greatest regard. But I have learned , as everyone else, that books do not con tain all of the information. The great school is found in everyday affairs. The contact with people and the passing of events, together with books, form the rTljcation. rjp"Not long ago a young man applied to one of the greatest newspaper editors In the United States for a position. It was to Pulitzer, the editor of the New York World, that he applied. The great editor asked, "Young man have you an idea?" He replied. "Yes sir, I have many ideas. I hope." "We can't use you," said Mr. Pulitzer. "See that crowd? Do you see any difference in the people?" "I see one man taller than the other." "Exactly." replied the great editor. "That is exactly what the world wants. A man whj stands above the others with an idea." "No man or woman can do many things eeaoeeeeeeeaeeeeea) YOUR WifE KNOWS What effect good fuel has upon a meal. '. - I , ' '.' well. He can not be a jack of all trades. It is true that this is a living age, an ago of one idea. This applies to women the same as to men. Every walk of life is open to women except political franchise and I hope that next June that over womanhood the mantle of franchise will : be cast by the voters of Oregon. And as a result I believe the politics of our state will be cleaner and purer than heretofore. Analyze the history of the world and you will find that the character of the makers ot the preat commonwealths have been moulded by the women. T With" one idea the human character- is 'impelled towair sunngnt, one ambition,' one goal. v "Edison, the wizard, is an examole rJ one idea. A poor bov. sellintrnawananare on the trains, he started in this life. The fascination of the teleeraDher'e ke brought to his mind the single purpose iq nis lire was sp shaped. He cultivated his special talent and to'the world has given the greatest and grandest gifts to mankind. .' ''. "At the best we have but 70 years in whicn to do our work, i Fifteen . years is Ukan o.f tie first part of l.fe and fifUei from the tatter, leaving but about 40 years of actual work. But tne Great Master was on this earth but 53 years when he laid down his burden. Hi in fluence though, will be felt on and on. even to the millenium. Surely in 40 years you should accomplish much. "To the girl and the woman of now, much greater advantages are being offer ed in higher education than CO years ago. About that manv vears airo in the ureat commonwealth of Massachusetts a humble girl, surrounded by hostile influences she was the cause of Holyoke college beins founded. The great results of hiffher education for women are largely due to her and to her one idea. 'As an example of sinele Duroose I have in mind the great African explorer, Livingston. A humele loo n boy he com menced. One hand to mind his work, the ot.ier haid a book, whici at intervals. when his work did not command his ' at tention, he gleanad knowledge. Into the darkest dsoths of tie great unknown ha wint. For yaars ha laooraJ anions the unknown races of te Afrcan forests. Tne world lost sight of him but he had his one idia always in mind. In the English and Scottish " Universi ties, inscead of welcoming the distinguish ed graduates on their visits on gradua tion days, as we do they are greeted with catcalls and cries, to brine the n bac 1 to their boyiood again. When Livirgj.. ton cane up tha aisie on the arm of the president. pirfe;t sile.ice reigned. A dif ferent honir was paid him. Only when he arosa on tna rdWjti he mat with a single inquiry, and that was, "What has susta led yoj?" Ha answered. "i.o. I am witn you always, even into the end of the earth." The address was greatly appreciated by the students and the few v;s'tors present. Tonight all will have an oppor tunity to hear the si.ver'ti-gue orator f the B.ue Mountains" at tne Christian c lurch. . f" w linn taiiMi i i..in..l ii., i, ..r h ) , M ggggBg ,aAn.,ia., a. ,....,.. il.-a. : -i in -. ..j . . :1 , . , ' "I So many people who have apparently recovered from an attack of La GriDDe ar trirrn with Pneumonia.
