Prior to that time only on taction No. 16 in each township was granted for th tupport of common tchoolt. Oregon got the sixteenth and thirty sixth section in each township, just doubl what any othar state or territory had received. Paragraph twenty bf th act stablish- ing Oregon as a territory reads: 'When th land in said territory shall b eurveyed under th direction of th government of the United States, pre paratory to bringing th same into mar ket Motion numbered sixteen and thirty tix in each township in said territory thall be, and th same is hereby, reserved for th purpose 0f being armlied to chool in said territory, and in th states and territories hereafter to be erected out of th same." When Oregon adopted the present etata constitution, preparatory' to becoming a tut on Sept 8th. 1857 in paragraph two of articl ight it wa declared that: Th proceed of an th lands which hav been or hereafter may be granted to this state, for educational purpotet; all the proceedt of the Ave nur,dred thou sand acres of land to w.iich th.s tiaie it entitled to by the provisions of an act ot congress, entitled "An act to appropriate the proceed of the sales of tae publ c lands, and to grant pre-emption richta." approved September 4th., 1841, and also the five per centum of th net proceeds of the tales the public lands, to which this state shall become entitled on her admission into the union (if congress shall consent to such appropriation of the two grantt last mentioned) thall be set a Dart at a separate and irreducible fund to be called th common school fund, th intrst of which together with all other revenue derived from th tchool land mntiond in thi section, thall be x clutivtly applied to the tupport and main tainenc of th common school in each district, and the purchas of suitable libraries therefor."
