register of the Lewiston, Ida., land office
was removed from office today by Presi
dent Roosevelt for "speculating in relin
quishments and undue political activity"
No successor ha yet been chosen.
Charges were preferred against West
some time ago, alleging he was making
improper use of his office and participat
ing too freely in politics. Numerous
specifications ware submitted charging
that West, aided by his brother, has in
duced settlers to make filing on lands
wiiich had previously been entered by
o'.her persons, They then persuaded
ee .tiers to institute contests before thi

entered into negotiations with the part
10 ine contest, inducing one or the other
to make relinquishment in favor of the
otlier. Whenever they secured relinouislv

relinquishments in contests which he and
his brother had planned, and was making
considerable money on the side by this
practice.
When the charge were sent him.
investigations were made by Special
Agent Goodwin and Inspector , O'Fallon
which sustained the charges, and on
their recommendations, indorsed by Land
Commissioner Richards and Secretary
Hitchcock, West was summarily removed

quested to recommend a successor West
Miaiwhile, until the vacancy i filled
the Lewiston . land office must remain
virtually closed, save for receipt of papers.
Whether or not West will figure in the
greater land frauds in northern Idaho, in
connection with Ketenbach and other, is
to be developed. Evidence against him
was worked up while the special agents
were after the land thieves, and It is
quite possible, if his offense constitutes a
violation of law, that he will be raked
into the toils at the request of District
Attorney Ruick.

How to stop the postoffice robberies
that have been going on in this city .for
the past three weeks. Is the problem that
is causing the utmost worriment to Post
master Moomaw, police, sheriff and de
tectives. " ..
Yesterday when it was thought that
fie person who had been doing the mosi
of the work of robbing the boxes, had
been located, the authorities were resting
somewhat easier, hoping that the thefts
would cease, but again this morning
another quantity of letters was found in
the rear of the Standard Furniture Com
pany' store which had been taken from
tie office sometime yesterday, . and now
the troubles of the authorities have' increased.
These letters belonged to the Indiana
Mine, and. all had been opened, their con
tents inspected, and if anything of value
was in them it had been taken.
Suspicion which has hitherto been di
rected toward a number of small boys, is
now being turned away. It is not
thought that any youth could commit
these robberies with such skill. A sharp
watch has been maintained over the
office, and no one has been detected.
There is now hardly any doubt but that
some older person is at the head of the
thefts, but who the person is, is the puz
zle. Postmaster Moomaw warns every
one having a postoffice box to be sure
and lock it provided he want ail of hi
mail.
Elk's Social
The Elk will give a social at their hall
on Saturday night, Nov. 18. An oyster
supper will be served and the evening
spent in. dancing. Musio by Thomases'
orchestra. All Elks and visiting members
and their ladies are invited.
