WHY IS OREGON SLOW?
' ManyOregonians are bothered, chagrin
ed, when they look over the - statistics
that give the measure of Oregon's activi
ties and growth in comparison with its
neighboring states and ask themselves
the question, why does not Oregon in
crease in population and wealth as fast as
Oregon has 94.560 square miles of
land surface, Washington has 66,880
square miles of land and Idaho 84.290
square miles of land. 'Oregon has a
better ' climate than either Idaho oT
Washington, and as large, if not a larger,
portion of good land than either of its
neighbors. "Washington has rather better
railroad accomodations than Oregon, but
Idaho like Oregon has but one strong
railroad track and if Oregon does not
grow as fast as its neighbors the cause
of its slower progress must be sought In
other than natural capacity for growth.
It does grow more slowly. In 1880.
Washington had a population of 75,1 16
people and in 1900, 618,103 an increase
of 442,987 In twenty years. That is the
per cent of increase for the twenty years
in Washington was 589.73 or 29.48 per
cint of increase for one year. Idaho
during the twenty years from 1880 to
1900 increased from 32.610 to 161.772.
a per cent of gain in population of 429.3
in the twenty years.
In 1880 there were 174.768 people in
Oregon, and in 1900 there were 413,536
a gain in the twenty years of '2?8,76Q
the per cent of increase for the twenty
years being 136.62.
The only rational explanation of Ore
gon's slowness is that the leaders and
those who controlled her are responsible
for the state not keeping the state in the
march of progress abreast of its neighbors.
If there are other reasons the Observer
will be glad to learn them.
It cost Baker county $628 to care for
har poor during the month of October.
The secretary of state is authority for
the statement that ninety per cent of
the women of Colorado exercise their
right of franchise.
January third to the fifth is the date
announced for the annual convention of
the Northwest Fruit Growers Association
and we can now begin to make definite
arrangements for their reception. Let
every choice sample of fruit be properly
cared for in order that our fruit exhibit
will fittingly represent our splendid fruit
section.
Germany is coquetting with Uncle Sam
and wants to wipe off the slate the ill
feeling over the prohibitive tariff action
of some months ago. It will be recalled
that in revising the tariff, to go into effect
next year, Germany has apparentl built
up a very high wall against the United
States, threatening to greatly interfere
with our foreign business, particularly
agricultural produce. Chancellor von
Buelow. the ambassador at Washington.
now says there is a wish to reach a new
agreement with this country, in harmony
not only with the friendly and political
relations of the two peoples, but also
with the economic needs of both. It
remains to be seen whethw the govern
ment can get together during the coming
session of congress in suck a wa as ta
increase the interchange of commodities.
Meanwhile it is interesting to note that
November opene with a great scarcity of
meat throughout Germany, and that the
mayors of a half dozen large cities there
urging the government for relief from the
unusually high prices. Orange Judo"
