OUR FOREIGN TRADE The trade of the United States for the year ending with De cember .1904 footed up $2,461. 657,235 pf which $1,035,909,197 were imports tnd $1,425,748,138 were exported domestic produce. The foreign trade of the United States stands next to that of the United Kingdom with Germany a cloee neighbor. The marvel of ioreign trade is " that our we have forged so near to the front without ships of our own, but being dependent upon for eign ships to carry our large quantities of exports and im ports. Just why our people have passed from a seafaring people to pronounced laud lubbers is accounted for only on the ground that it pays better to operate on the land, or at least the people think it pays better. We have spent, in the past 17 years, on the improvement of our rivers and harbors, $261, 082,752 so that foreign ships could make more profit in baud- ling our foreign trade, for 95 per cent of our foreign trade is carried in foreign ships to which we pay annually for freight $200,000,000. It looks as though it was about time that the the American people take a level headed view of the condi tion of our merchant marine. and formulate some plan where by American goods can be borne to foreign countries in American owned ships. When the senate passed the naval appropriation bill with the provisiou for two new bat tleships an intimation was giv en that no more would be au thorized. The senate would bet ter wait to hear from the people on that subject. Americans gen erally desiro that their govern ment shall have as good a navy as floats on the bosom of the sea, and they are ready to authorize the buildiug and manning of ships until that point is reached. City ; 8tata .;: NEW YORK JOURNAL First, that Western Oregon is very slow to realize that the eastern portion of the state is developing at the rate we are and have been for the past ten years- The other is of much greater importance, that we, the residents of this great Inland Empire do not realise what is in store for ns when all our val leys and plains become populat ed and our varied resources developed. lmm , , t . t I , I -3 I tl ' It is the constant addition of little things as well as large ones that characterizes the growth of a city. We have, reference at this moment to the number of up-to-date delivery wagons on our streets, representing the many different branches of trade. To say the least, they look city- tied. Now that it is an assured fact that we are to have an exhibit at the fair, it is almost as neo - cessarv that the party in charge of the exhibit should be sup plied with something in the line of literature containing a short but concise statement of the re sources of this county. We would suggest this receive the immediate attention of those nterested in the exhibit. A county whose varied products requires more than a train every day to transport these products to market,' certainly has a basis for a showing that few counties on the Pacific coast can exceed.
