Appeal Tribune Wednesday, August 9, 2017 3B Grand Hotel to pay customers for eclipse reservation problems Who reached settlements JONATHAN BACH STATESMAN JOURNAL The Oregon Department of Justice has reached settlements with 10 Oregon hotels after customers complained about rates being raised or reservations being canceled leading up to the Aug. 21 solar eclipse. The Grand Hotel in Salem must cut checks to 22 people who booked rooms for around the time of the eclipse. The Grand’s customers, from as far away as Japan and the United Kingdom, will receive $500 for each reservation, DOJ spokeswoman Kristina Edmunson said. In addition, the company is paying $3,500 into the DOJ’s Consumer Protec- tion and Education account as part of the settlement, Edmunson said. “This is to help support our consumer education and outreach work,” she said. Quality Suites in Keizer also reached a settlement with the state. This comes after the DOJ said earlier in July that a dozen Oregon hotels were working with the department to find so- lutions to complaints from customers about having their rates increased or reservations canceled. The DOJ said at the time it had seen an uptick in complaints from customers about their room rates doubling and tri- pling, or having the reservations can- celed, for the time of the eclipse. Edmun- son said Monday, July 31, the department continues to get complaints. Additional settlements are possible. Steven Johnson, president of the Grand Hotel, declined to comment Monday. One million people are expected to come to Oregon for the eclipse. Many are expected to head to Salem in the Willam- ette Valley and Madras in Central Ore- gon, prime spots in the path of totality where people will, weather-permitting, see the total eclipse. “Oregon’s Unlawful Trade Practice Act prohibits a business from making unlawful, false or misleading represen- tations concerning the offering price of or a person’s cost for services,” the DOJ said in July. “Booking a reservation for a consum- er at a certain rate, followed by the hotel either cancelling or increasing that res- ervation rate constitutes a deceptive practice under the UTPA.” Send questions, comments or news tips to jbach@statesmanjournal.com or 503-399-6714. There’s a new dog fighting crime at the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. Zeke, a Belgian Malinois, was wel- comed by the Sheriff’s Office earlier in the summer. The 3-year-old dog’s part- ner is Senior Deputy Peter Marcellais, who describes Zeke as “a very playful puppy.” In May, the duo wrapped up K9 han- dler certification school. They had their first apprehension as a team in late July, when they helped Woodburn police with a search for a suspect. Zeke’s favorite activity is working, Marcellais said. “He will shake with excitement when I get him suited up and ready for our shift,” he said in a news release. Don Mortensen of Marion County donated enough money to make the purchase possible. Mortensen “made the donation in honor of his late wife and their love for animals,” the Sher- iff’s Office said. Marcellais and Zeke visited Morten- sen as a show of thanks.
