Athletes of the year were announced at the June 6 Statesman Journal Sports Awards. SOFTBALL BASEBALL TRACK ANNA REED/STATESMAN JOURNAL Mitchell Bell Maggie Buckholz Kalulu Ngaida School: Cascade. Year: Junior. District results: Oregon West Confer- ence champion in high jump, triple jump, fifth in long jump. State results: Second in Class 4A tri- ple jump, fourth in high jump. Season personal records: 5-3 (high jump), 15-5.25 (long jump), 37-2 (triple jump). School: Silverton. Year: Junior. Position: Shortstop. Honors: First-team all-Mid-Willam- ette Conference; Mid-Willamette Con- ference co-player of the year. Statistics: Buckholz batted .734 with a 1.430 slugging percentage. She hit 17 doubles, four triples, 10 home runs, 64 RBI and scored 39 runs. School: Cascade. Year: Senior. Position: Pitcher/outfielder. Honors: First-team all-Oregon West Conference. Statistics: Bell batted .462 with a 1.135 slugging percentage. He hit eight dou- bles, nine home runs and had 29 RBI. Scio junior Ashton Phillips is nominated for Softball Player of the Year in the Statesman Journal Sports Awards. Ashton Phillips is 3A state player of the year Dayton’s Haley Couch named pitcher of year 3A all-state softball team 2017 Player of the Year: Ashton Phillips, Scio Co-Pitchers of the Year: Haley Schimmel, Rainier and Haley Couch, Dayton Coach of the Year: Jim Knox, Rai- nier First Team All-State JaVon Logan Kasidee Parazoo School: Scio. Year: Sophomore. Position: Outfielder/pitcher. Honors: First-team all-PacWest Con- ference; first-team Class 3A all-state. Statistics: Parazoo batted .566. She hit 17 doubles, 12 home runs, had 64 RBI and scored 47 runs. She was 9-0 with a .45 ERA with 48 strikeouts in 46 innings pitched. School: Regis. Year: Senior. Position: Pitcher/shortstop. Honors: First-team all-Tri-River Con- ference; first-team Class 2A/1A all-state. Statistics: Logan batted .516 with .620 on-base and 1.000 slugging percentages. He hit five doubles, five triples and five home runs. He had 21 RBI and scored 38 runs. On the mound he was 5-0 with a 1.94 ERA and struck out 23 batters with sev- en walks in 18 innings. Bishop Mitchell School: Kennedy. Year: Senior. District results: Tri-River Confer- ence champion in 100, 200, long jump and triple jump. She hit 14 doubles, two triples, four home runs, stole 32 bases, 43 RBI and scored 71runs. Brett Traeger School: Kennedy. Year: Senior. Position: Pitcher/shortstop. Honors: First-team all-Tri-River Con- ference; first-team Class 2A/1A all-state. Statistics: Traeger batted .440 with a .463 on-base percentage. He had six dou- bles, three home runs, 33 RBI and scored 30 runs. He was 10-2 with a 2.15 ERA and struck out 88 batters. Brock Rogers School: Silverton. Year: Senior. District results: Mid-Willamette Con- ference champion in 110 hurdles, second in 100, third in 1,600 relay, fourth in 400 relay. She was 17-5 with a 2.55 ERA and 135 strikeouts against 22 walks. Coach Don Heuberger School: Regis. Year: 35th. Honors: Class 2A/1A state coach of the year. Team accomplishments: Regis went 18-2, including a perfect 13-0 record in winning the Tri-River Conference, and reached the OSAA Class 2A/1A state semifinals.
