The store is providing outfits for the SSC Moth- er’s Day Tea & Fashion Show, which is 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 13, at the center, 115 Westfield St. Visit: http://www.silver tonseniorcenter.org/. Store hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. The store also has ample volunteer opportunities available for anyone of working or retired age; call 503-874- 1154 to learn more. “I just want people to see the thrift shop; it’s one of our hidden treasures in town,” Dodie said. “And it does help support the sen- ior center a lot.” Donna added: “It helps the seniors of the entire community.” Another SSC note is that the monthly pancake breakfast – and it is now officially a monthly meal – takes place from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 27. That’s pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, fruit and beverages at a cost is $5 for adults and $3 for kids with under 4 din- ing free. Wearing a different hat, Dodie reminds people that the Legacy Silverton Health Auxiliary Bake Sale is 8 to 10 a.m. Satur- day, May 13, in the parking lot, 342 Fairview St., where homemade goodies can be enjoyed during and after the scheduled Fun Run. Cartoon contest The brief 80-degree spell may have been a heretofore anomaly this spring, but by the time Homer Davenport Days check in Aug. 4-6, warm weather should be the standard. Another standard is the celebration of a Silver- ton favorite son, the festi- val’s namesake and famed international cartoonist of his day. Homer passed away 105 years ago May 2 at the young age of 45, having contracted pneu- monia in New York City while on an assignment to interview survivors of the Titanic. The contest began in 1984, and the aim has been to orchestrate it into an in- ternational contest wor- thy of its namesake. Gus noted that it had achieved just that, largely under the direction of Jack Hande. Entrants over the years have hailed from every colonized continent in the world. Hopes are that a re- newed energy, and mon- ey, will lift it back to that level. After all, Gus as- serted, a Homer Daven- port celebration would be naked without a cartoon contest. “It’s been sporadic over the course of a cou- ple of years,” Gus said, speculating that the long- standing $200 prize may have been afflicted by in- flation and turning top sketchers elsewhere. That’s one thing that’s changed as the grand prize now fetches $750, followed by a $500 first prize, $300 second and $200 third. There will also be a people’s choice awards. The entry fee is $25. Judging criteria are artis- tic skill, clearly implied message and the cartoon’s overall appeal. Gus said all prizes will be determined by a blue- ribbon panel of judges, while five people’s choice awards will be deter- mined by popular vote. Judges are Rep. Rick Lew- is (R-Silverton), Sen. Lew Frederick (D-Portland) and Dr. David Lewis, a cartoon aficionado and member of the Confeder- ated Tribes of Grand Ronde. Submission deadline is July 28.
