GOOD GOOD ROAD DRAGGING Two-Stab Log, With "Set Back," Found Satisfactory. One Common Mistake in Construction of Device la That It la Too Heavy and Another la In Use of Square Tlmbera. A great many experlmenta have been made with a great variety of de vices for road dragging, but the two alab log or plank drag with liberal "set back" baa been found the moat satisfactory. Double draga tor work ing both sides of the roadway simul taneously have been tried with only limited success, says a writer in the Illinois Farmer. The reason for thla Ilea In the fact that both sides of an earth road are never exactly alike. Thla causes the two parts of the drag to work unevenly and to interfere with each other. It la also Impossible for one man to operate both parte successfully, aa will be shown later on Two mistakes are commonly made In constructing a drag. The first lies In making It too heavy. It ahould be ao light that one man can easily lift It liealdea. a light drag responds more readily to various methods of bitching and to the shirting of the position and weight of the operator, both of which are essential consider ations. A drag can be made heavier at any time by proper weighting. The other mistake la In the use of squared timbers, Instead of those with sharp edges, whereby the cut ting effect of Bharp edgea la loot and the drag la permitted to glide over Instead of to equalize the irregular ities In the surface of the road. These mistakes aro due partly to badly drawn Illustrations and plana of draga which have occasionally appeared In newspapers and partly to the errone oua Idea that It la necessary that a large amount of earth shall be re moved at one time. A dry red cedar log la the beat material for a drag. Red elm la an excellent material, and box elder, aoft maple, or even willow are preferable to oak, hickory, or ash. The log should be 7 or 8 feet long and from 10 to 12 Inches In di ameter, and carefully split down the middle. The heaviest and best slab should be selected for the front At point on mis ironi siaD incnea from the end that Is to be at the middle of the road locate the cen ter of the hole to receive a cross stake and 22 lnchea from the other and of the front alab locate the cen ter for another cross stake. The bole for the middle stake will lie on a line connecting and halfway between tho other two. The back alab ahould now be placed In position behind the other. FTom the end which la to be at the middle of the road meaaure 20 lnchea for the center of the cross stake, and t Inches from the other end locate the center of the outside stake. Find the center of the middle bole aa before. When these holea are brought opposite each other, one end of the back alab will lie IS lnchea nearer the center of the roadway than the front one, giving what la known as "net back." Tbe holea should be two Inches In diameter. Care must be taken to hold the auger plumb In boring theae holea In order that , Qood Tim to Think. At this season, while yon are haul ing the crop to market. Is a good time for you to reflect on the advan tage of good roads, and how much time and money are lost by poor ones. Country Road Systsm. Thirty-three counties In Michigan have adopted the county road system and about 11,000.000 will be spent In Improvements. Tbe plan la to Improve county trunk line roada at the ex panse of th entire county. FOUND IN MARYLAND 1? i i r S--av the stakes ahall fit properly. Th bole to receive the forward end of the chain ahould be bored at the aama time. The two alaba ahould be held 30 lnchea apart by the atakea. Straight grained timber ahould be selectee for the atakea, ao that each atake ahall fit enugly Into the 2-Inch bole when the two alaba are In the prop or position. The atakea ahould taper gradually toward the end. There ahould be no aboulder at the point where the atakea enter the alab. The atakea ahould be fastened In place by wedges only. When the atakea have been placed fn position and tightly wedged, a brace two lnchea thick and four lnch ea wida ahould be placed diagonally to them at the ditch end. The brace ahould be dropped on the front elab ao that lta lower edge ahall He within an Inch of the ground, while the other end ahould rest In the angle between the alab and the end stake. CONSTRUCTION OF GOOD ROAD Lesa Tim Should be Devoted Building and More Given to Inv provement of Dirt Roada. to One point Is generally overlooked In all onr fuss about good roada. and that la the size of the job. Advocatea of big bond Issues talk aa If fifty million dollar would give a state like Pennsylvania or Ohio good roada. whereas It will do nothing of the aort It will build a few roads In each conn ty, and only a few. Another mistake Is to confuse road Improvement and road construction or reconstruction We loosely call a road built at great expense an "Improved" road, and we bare done thla ao long that the worda "road Improvement" are "now asso ciated in the public mind with heavy expense accounts and big bond Is sues. Road-building la coatly no mat ter whether the road be brick, mac adam, asphalt or a combination of auch materials. It Is too costly to be universal or even extensive, says the National Stockman and Farmer. But road Improvement may be extenatve. perhaps universal, and It may at the same time be more economical than the nresent sieve sytem of using road runas. Let us get a nrm noia oi inese two great road facta, namely, that road-building can cover only a frac tion of the mileage In thla generation; and that road Improvement can be ap plied to all or nearly all of It When we get these tacts firmly In mind we shall not devote less atten tion to road construction but more to road Improvement We ahall Insist that more money be provided for the great body of road mileage, that It shall be applied In a more rational way. and then we shall hare good earth roads. Just now In the clamor for road building the dirt road has toe few friends, too little money, too lit tle study aa to methoda of Improve ment and entirely too little attention to Ita upkeep. At the same time this neglected dirt road of America la 2,. 000,000 mllea long, while the con structed road la 200,000 mllea long. Fortunately a few communities are pointing the way to better dirt roads at lower coat The systematic use ot the drag all the year, proper drain age, cod st ant care instead of spas modic working these are all on the finger-board that points to good dirt roads. Qood Roada. New Jersey waa the pioneer In the good roads movement but New Tork haa 80,000 mllea of road with a great er mileage of Improved hlghwaya than all the other eastern statea pnt to gether. New Tork will tbla year apend $21,000,000 on roada. Ntw Road Surface. In Montana road experts have found that crude sugar beet ayrup sprinkled over dirt roads that were dusty make the surface Impervious to rain and two coats a year will keep the road In first class condition and at very low cost Spring Work Best Tbe best work that can be dona on country roada Is Just after the spring rains. Thorough dragging with th put log or If that la not available har rowing and rolling will Improve their condition at leaat fifty per cent until the fall rains come. Plant Die. Th loss Incurred from plant dis ease Is often underestimated by th farmer, paaae unrecognized or I re garded as natural and Inevitable. - w. .
