A rural conference for the discussion of farm problems is to be held at the Oregon Agricultural this fall, and a biff farmers' excursions to the col lege will be organized, with special rates from different parts of the state, to enable progressive farmers from the various communities to at tend and take part in the program me. All organizations interested in rural life, including, all religious de nominations and those interested in the country schools and the im provement of the farming commun ities, are expected to join in thresh ing out home, the farm, rural so cial and economic conditions. Prof. R, D. HetzeL director of extension, at the college, has been receiving letters from all sections of the state commending the plan and offering assistance. The railroads will be asked to run excursion trains to bring the farmers and their families to spend a day or more at the college during the con ference. The different departments of the college are preparing a large number of exhibits and demon strations of better methods of agri cultural practice and home making, and some of the best speakers and farm experts in the west will be present to lecture. The date is not yet set, as the college wishes to avoid conflict with other important meetings, but an nouncement will be made as soon as possible. . Oregon Agricultural College, Cor vail is. Ore., Aug. 10. Supt. of Schools J. S. Landers of Pendleton was made the first president of the Senior Industrial Educational Asso ciation of Oregon, organized at the Oregon Agricultural College for the promotion of industrial education in the schools of the state. Prof. R. D. Hetzel, director of extension at the college, is secretary-treasurer. A chapter is to be established in every county, and the president of each of these will act as a vice- president of the state association and a member of the executive board. As set forth in the constitution adopted, the purpose of the organ ization is the promotion of indus trial education, including' agricul ture, domestic science and art, man ual training, and kindred subjects in the schools of the state, to the end that the boys and girls may be educated to take an active and effective part in the substantial ad vancement of the commonwealth. Membership is open to all over 18 years of age who are interested in any form of industrial education, and junior clubs will be formed later on to organize the children so that the work may be carried on to the best advantage. to hold in the flumes of the !Hu phide f.i de: troy ants u th I - mix a re of t'.iree to ums of emetic and four ouikvs of should be smeared over bits of china or chips and placed i" tho ants' runway. It gives a general phase of orcharding. Another publication will be issued later on, dealing ex clusively with the research side of the work. Experiments on pollination pro blems of apples and pears in the Rogue River, Willamette, Hood River, and Walla Walla valleys have been in progress for several years. Valuable data has been secured from them, a part of which is used in the bulletin. Oregon Agricultural College, Corvallis, Ore., Aug. 10 The best lege," says Registrar II. M. Ten nan t In a statistical reiwrt whieh" he has just prepared. The report shows the enrollment of students for the year l!)Ot5-7 to have been 833; for the succeeding four years respectively 1.158; 1. 351; 1.591, and 1.77S; while the year just closed showed a total en rollment of 2.8fitf. The' figures do not include any duplication of students enrolled in two or nunc different departments, as the music and domestic science for example. "In 1910-11. says Mr. Tennant, "the total registration was 1.77S; during the past year the registra tion in the school of Agriculture alone, excluding all duplicates, was just 43 less than the above men tioned total. While this compari son considers winter short course siuuents, me increase tn the num ber of regular students is corre spondingly as large. Excluding all winter -short course students and all duplicats for the year 1911-12. the increase in school of ag riculture alone for regular students was 78 per cent. At the same time that the registration has so greatly increased, the general average in scholarship has been raised." All counties in Oregon but one were represented in the past year's enrollment, besides 36 other states and territories and 8 foreign coun tries. The statistics showing the comparative representation of the sons and daughters of farmers and of men of other vocations are in teresting. Thofe who came from farm homes constituted 46 per cen of the student body, while 54 pe cent came from cities, towns an villages. - It is a significant fact that out o a total of 1.051 (which excludes the short course students and those in the school of music) the large ma jority were eithet earning their ex penses or contributing toward the necessary sum Dy wonting in some of a large number of occupations out side their study hours. There were 253 who earned every cent they spent, and 160 more who earne nan tneir money, wnne Z43 more were partially self supporting, mak ing a total of 65b, compared with 395 whose parents provided thei entire funds. A class of 124 students complete) their studies in June, and two more satisfied the requirements for ad vanced degrees.
