Yankton Crange Fair The Yankton Grange will hold ils Third Annual Fair at Yatidton on tlie 2M day of September and there will lie something doing al! the time at this event, weich has bacotne very popular on nccoiin of the success of the ast two fain, and as it is the only thing of the kind In this end of the county everytody should make it a point to take it in, and to exhibit something that will take one of the blue ribbons. From this fair there will probably grow a big county fair that the whole county will be interested In and that will be in charge of the county court. Toe Yankton Grange will have the honor ol starting the fair movement in tliix county. Two five iniJn ball games were tilaved between Clatskanie and Rai- i j - the home team getting the first to 0 and Clatxkanl the second 8 to 8. LABOR DAY AT RAINIER I. bor Day was to have been a big day in R tinier and the proxperom little Columbia County town was the Mecca for people all along the line from Port land to Astoria. The Anderson-Edward fight for the Championship of the North west was to take place, aud everyone knew that it would be a bloody good batile. They came on every train despite the fact that Sheriff Thompson had an nounced that he would not allow the fikrht to go, and there was a couple of I oat loads on hatid from Vancouver. The Sheriff had been at Salem, and did not get into Portland nntil eight o'clock on Labor Day morning, which was ton late for him to catch the first tiain to Rainier, so he telephoned to Deputy Lake, instructing him to go down and see that there was no fight. Lake caught the Lurline and it was a mighty sad crowd that be met down below. The fans in Portland were telephoned, but the boats bad already left Vancouver, and it was too late to stop them, so tbey made the trip for the pleasure of the ride. From the time that the Deputy Slier iff arrived in Rainier he was surrounded bv an anxious crowd that tried to per suade him that prize fights were just tbe thing for tbe advancement of the com munity prosperity, and when onj per son was through talking another com menced. Edwards did not show np at all, na he was probably stopped by friends in Portland, and when Mr. Thompson arrived on the three o'clock train all that tbe promoters wanted was to have a couple of six round boxing bouts, which he allowed to be put on, as there is nothing in violation of tbe law in a boxing match. The first one was between Fred And erson and Chuck O'Connell, and was greatly enjoyed as young Anderson showed a lot of class and gave O'Connell, who is an old war bone that could eat him np in a fight, all that be could haudle in a boxing match. Tbe second go was between BuJ Anderson, light weight champion of the Northwest and Spike Morrissey, of Boston. Compared with Vancouver, where Anderson hails from, Boston must lie a poor town for scrapper, for M irrissey, though he has met some of the good ones at different times, did not tunse any showing at ail with Anderson, who is one of the fastest it has ever been our pleasure to see. In anticipation of a bard go with Edwards' he was trained down and in the pink of condition, and tbe things he could have done to Morrissey if the Sheriff had not been at the ringside are better imagined than told. Peter Buzukos and Hug Copple were scheduled to wrestle at tbe K. P. Hall in the evening, but the people of Rai Dier did not seem to care for tbe wrestl ing game, and there was not sufficient crowd to make it worth their while for the grapplers to go on. Jack IV pa in came up from Gobi this week to attend the session of county Court. . Mr. ihipaln is helping Road Sup ervisor Anliker in the crushing of rock for the lioble road and will be down the river with thectuther about three more weeks. All told, there will be some 2000 yards of rock Crushed before the machine is moved back to this place, most of which goes on the Shllo Basin road. The place where the machine is woikitig at Goble is convenient aud the amount of lock crushed has been up to the average, and one day last week 107 yards was put throug t in eight hours, which is a record run Mr. Dspalu has been objecting to the court to the pro position of this district keeping up the repairs on the crusher. It is moved around to different places, and while if it breaks down while in actual operation in a place that district must repair it, still an example of the Injustice to this district is to be fuliud iu the trip to Goble. A short time before going down a new set of eccentrics was pur chased for the crusher for 73, and by the time the run at Goble is completed thete eccentrics will have to be replaced. It seems as though it would be a good idea tor tbe up keep of the tools, which were purchased by the general fund, to come out of the same fund. aThe new coasting steamer of the Mc Cormick Line will be lauuehed to day and will soon be making regular trips between St. Helens and San Francisco. The new boat will be called the Wil lamette, and will carry nearly a million feet of lumber and about sixty passen gers. She will make her first trip about the first of December.
