Harry K Lovell, who worked in this oflice for some time last April, has been arrested at Hillsboro, charged with for gery. He is also wanted at this place for the same offense, as there is' a war rant out here charging him with forging two check on the Mist Publishing Co , amounting to 4:10, last April. It has rot been found out yet whether the Washington County officials will deal with him or lit will lie returned to St. Helens for trial. i ue corneuus J nbuiie, a new pajier recently started at Cornelius, one of the bet.t towns in Washington County, has arrived at this oflice, with tho name of Wirgil M. Hasiry at tl.e head of Ihu ed itorial colum. The Tribune is sitnated in a section of the country that is mak Ing rapid atrides in improvement, and has a Held the possibilities of which are unlimited. The fishing around St. Helens is the best in the State of Oregon, witii the possible exception of some of the moon tainof districts where the speckled trout are the thickest, and then it ia, on ly a matter of the kind of fishing that one prefer. One day 1. st week Joe Specht caught 00 pouuds of 6ne salmon trout over on Lewis Hiver.' and Oicar Olsen caught 45 pounds of croppies, while Chas. Scott comes up the street aliout every other day with a string of black bass that would feed a Dutch family for a week. Several bass weigh ing five or six pounds have been caught this year, and the croppies are fine, fat fellows that it does not require ery many to make a meal. The salmon trout are a fine fish as there are in any stream, end when one of the big fal lows is hooked there is sometning doing until be is landed or escapes. The Webrman Case Several arrests have been made but nothing came of any of them a the people picked up were only tramps that could not have ponsibly committed the murder. One wan caught at Deer Island and George Grant went down and brought him to thi place, bherilf Carnine of Cowlitz County picked one up at Kalamaand phoned for the Sher iir of this county to come ai.d get Mm but before Deputy lake got there he had turned him loose ) there was proof that he was not the man wanted. Another was caught and questioned at Clstskanie, but was turned loose, SCHOOLS START With the exception of St. ens the schools all over county openen last Monday, Hfel the ahd school starts here next Monday morning. The principals of the various schools follow: Scappoose, Clare G. Morey. Warren. J. W. Fisher. Iloulton. E. S. Faxon. St. Helens. J. B, Wilkerson. Yankton. Mrs. Alma Bow man. Deer Island. Miss Eva Burns. Goble. Mrs. J. II. Collins. Rainier. P. M. Nash. QuincyJ E. J. Thomson. Clatskanie. C. R. McCoy. Hazel Grove. C. J. Tucker. f Superintendent J'. H. Collins looks forward to a very success ful year among the schools and is well pleased with the selections of teachers in the majority of cases. It is doubtful if there is a county in the State of Oregon where the various school districts are in better hnancial conuition than in Columbia, despite the fact that more money has been spent for new buildings in the past two years than during any former period of five years. Church year close Last Sunday marked the rlo-ie of an other conference year 8-1 -'ar as ths local Methodist church is concerned. At its meeting Saturday night the olliialc b aid granted the pastor a weeks vacation be fore conference which convenes at Salem next Monday and continues in session for one week. Sundays services were an inspiration to all who attended. In the niornint the pastor reread parts of his report to the fourth quarterly conference setting fourth the phenominal growth of tho church during the pst year. Since the first ol Oct, ll10, the membership has been increased from 23 to 80. Tl e financial report showed an increase of ISO per cent in the receipts aud dis btiremcnts of the church. All benevolent collections and all bil.s of the church will ba reported as pai I in full. For this excellent condition friends outside the memlietship de.-crve great Credit. Many have Cooperated most heartily in the works of ths year. Following the reading ol the repoit the pastor administered thu sacrament ol balitisim to Id. Five oilier were liabtid in the afternoon. At the even ing seivice, after a short sermon, 30 were received into full membership from pro bation am! by letter. Hunters Take Notice. Hunting or fishing upon rece eipts furnished by notaries and justices of the peace will not be allowed in the future, according to instructions recently issued by the State Board of fish and game Commissioners. Deputies all over the state have been told to arrest any hunter or fisherman who fails to show a regular hunt ing or fishing license in his pos session, upon demand. Ihis holder of a receipt will be treated in every way the same as though he had never made application for a license. Tho reason for this is plain. In the past, notaries and justices of the peace who have authority to collect for licenses, issue a receipt and mail the money to the County Clerk, who, in turn mails a license to the notary or Justice to be delivered to the aoplicant. have failed to do so, pocketing the money and advising the ap plicant that a receipt is equiva lent to a license. To stop this petty grafting. Game Warden Fin ley insists that licenses, in the future, wiil be recognized as the only evidence of a right to hunt or fi3h. "We have a fairly complete record of notaries and justices who have retained money belong, inn to the game fund," said Warden Finiey, "and they are located'all over the state. These lien have actually accepted money for licenses and made no return of it, nor have they se cured licenses for those who have made application. By arresting those holding merely receipts for licenses, we will shortly run down those who have been guilty of this fraud." It is provided by law that any " justice of tho peace or notary in the state may receive money for Connty Clerk on application for hunting or fishing licenses, and the Game Warden has no dis position to place an obstacle in the way of hunters to thus easily secure their rights. He is firm, however, in his intention - to break up a practice which v has proven demoralizing to many public and semi-pulic officials in all parts of Oregon. The editor was busy when he was asked: "How are the mar kets?" The man was referred to the office devil who looked wise and said: "Young men un steady; girls lively and in good demand; papas firm, but declin ing; mamas unsettled, waiting for higher bids; coffee consider able mixed; fresh fish active and slippery; eggs quiet but ex pected to open soon; whiskey still going down; onions strong; yeast, rising; breadstuffs, heavy but rising; boots and shoes, con stantly going up and down; hats and caps, not so high as last year, excepting foolscap, which is sta tionery; tobacco, very low and has a downward tendency ; sil ver, close, but not close enough to get hold of." , Sunday School Convention Trie Fir-t Annual Session of the Columbia County Sunday t-cliod Asso ciation ill be held in Kuitin r Septem ber lmh and 'JOth. 1D11. Ah Sunday Schools iu Columbia County are re quested to send delegates, teachers and officers especially, with pencil snd pap er and a goodly supply id ipiestions.
