A The Manufacturers' Association of Portland, which includes only a small per cent of the manufac turers of that city, has had as its guest this week the most rabid opponent of labor organizations, Harrison Gray Otis of Los An geles. The Manufacturers' As sociation professes to believe in what is known as "the open shop," but Mr. Otis believes in the closed shop. That is, he would not permit a man to work unle3s he first renounced his alle giance to a trade union. Mr. Otis has made a fortune out of this idea, and his paper has the support of all who deny the right of workingmen to organize for their own protection, and this pays well. The Typographical Union, against which Otis' efforts are mainly directed, is one of the most intelligent and conservative organizations in the country, Otis being the only newspaper proprietor of any consequence on the Pacific Coast who opposes it No organization of capitalists has done as great good to as great a, Wastid-A koo1 poultry and bee man.
