The Manufacturers' Association
of Portland, which includes only
a small per cent of the manufac
turers of that city, has had as its
guest this week the most rabid
opponent of labor organizations,
Harrison Gray Otis of Los An
geles. The Manufacturers' As
sociation professes to believe in
what is known as "the open
shop," but Mr. Otis believes in
the closed shop. That is, he
would not permit a man to work
unle3s he first renounced his alle
giance to a trade union. Mr.
Otis has made a fortune out of
this idea, and his paper has the
support of all who deny the right
of workingmen to organize for
their own protection, and this
pays well. The Typographical
Union, against which Otis' efforts
are mainly directed, is one of the
most intelligent and conservative
organizations in the country,
Otis being the only newspaper
proprietor of any consequence on
the Pacific Coast who opposes it
