YANKTON-PI rTSBURG ROAD Last Suiidiiy'sOlegonian devoted about (wo columns of space to a description of the fine new n ad uu w hich County Sur veyor Preseott and t surveying crew" are nowatwoik. The write up contains a large map of the omity, and parts of it that are of particular local interest are given herewith : W hat w ill undoubtedly be one of the grandest roads in Oregon is the Port-land-Astoiin-I.eaches Road, upon which active work is now beljig ruthed by the Columbia County and Clatsop County road engine, ra. W'hen the road is com pleted it will give a tine, smooUi, hard surfaced boulevard connecting Portland and the be.iches by automobile, the trip requiring only a few hours. This is the road fntheied by Lewis Ku-wll, a di rector of tho Portland Automobile Club. The read, though it mutt crosn sev eral mountain taugc, will iiave a grade ot 3 pei cent in Columbia County. In C'lats.p Canity the amde will not be much iu jie, except in 01 e or two pia.-es. To make this easy climb pcsible, Co lumbia County surveyors have 111.1; ped out an almofet entirely different route from Yunktou to Pittsburg. Removing several hills of 15 and 20 per cent grade, the rofld between the-e points will in ces-1 sarily be made a few miles longer, but the low grade will permit a motor car to make the added distance as easily as to climb the hills. Columbia County will build 24 miles of road to make the new boulevard possible, Clatsop County will contribute more, while Multnomah County's roads all the way to the Columbia County line are in excellent condition. Columbia County liaj regraded and graveled sev eral miles of highway and work on the remainder of the loud will be coLtinued this winter. If the estimates of the engineers at work on the road are not emits, the rond will bo Completed by n"xt July, thereby giving plenty of lime for the late summer beach travel. Men are at work id the Oats.. p end of the highway. The road is the result of ngitation started by Portland, St. Helens, Astoria and beach points in PJ08. Tte County Commissioners have been authorized to share the expense. Under the uperviion of County Sur veyor Preseott, 14 men have been at work laying out the new road through the Columbia County hills. Columbia County's report of the road's progress w ill be leady to submit to the County Court iu January. In the 24 miles nl toad mapped out, none will be more titan of 3 per ceut grade. This undertaking will cost fiiO.OOO. Part of this large amount, however, will be met by Individual sub scriptions. One of the benetlts to be derived from the boulevard i shown by the Western Cooperage Company, of Portland. This company own ninety million feet of timber near Houlton, Columbia Couaty, which it must remove within two years. Tha company plans to transport the timber on automobile trucks when the road ia completed. This would reduce the cost of getting out the timber, and would also facilitate it removal. The cooperage company, it is understood, is willing to contribute its share of the cost of thd highway. Another fiini, the Trenholm Orchard Company which is platting 1000 acres near Yankton, is also willing to subscribe several thous and dollar to the fund. From Portland the road leads through Llunton to Scappoose, and thence to St. Helens, From St. Helen to Yankton the road w as regraded and the grade re duced. A mile and a half beyond the road is now in good shape. At Yank ton the road will branch off and a new route following Milton Creek and nu merous other little stream will be taken until the top of the tidge is reached. Tnis will make a 3 per cent grade all the way. At the top ol the ridge connection with the little Nehalem River Valley will be made and this will be followed until Pittsburg is reached. This may seem sirar.gn to those who are not actually in the work but it if, neverthe less, tiue. While it is true the increase in population has uUo increased pro9 peiity, yet there is always a following of dependent classes and institutions, who care for this class, are bound to feel this increase and the Boys' and Girls' Aid Society of Oregon in making its annual plea (or Thanksgiving donations wishes to bring this fact before its many friends. Columbia County has always been one of the Society's best friends and the Management depends on the geneiosity of the citizens at this time of the year. The County Court subcrib?s the sum of $1 per month for its euppart. The public schools are quite a factor toward the maintenance of this in stitution and at this time of the year the chnritahle pnhlic, M well ns the public tchool, are called Upon to BHbcribe all they can afford for this cause. Four hundred and idnty-eix cases were received and cared (or during the pat year bv the Society. These children rame from seventeen different counties of tho State. Besides giving a home the Society has, as quickly as possibl, (ound permanent homes for them in private families where they are vitiited by the Society' agents in order to ascertain il thev are receiving the proper care and being sent to school regularly.
