Rainier County Official Paper THE PAST CAMPAIGN The editor of the Mist has no excuse to make to' anyone for this paper's course during the past campaign. He was elected chair man of the Republican County Committee and did his best by all means to secure the election of the entire ticket, State and County, and if any part of Ithe ticket has failed of success it is through no fault of his. The best speakers at the disposal of the State Committee have held meetings in the principal towns of the county, and nearly all of the small campaign fund raised by contribution of the Candidates has been used to defray their expenses and for the circulation of campaign literature. The Democratic candidates in the county campaign have been treated with the utmost courtesy and no charge has been made against them. Mr. Thompson's friends at Clatskanie seem to feel aggrieved because the Mist would not publish in his card the charge, indirectly made against the Republicans, of "Machine methods." We wrote Mr. Thomp son as follows: Mist and its editor never have been the recipients of any con siderable amount of patronage from the Sheriff' office. We do not believe the records will show we have had over $10 a year of the Sheriff's printing. Sheriff sale ads have been published wherever the parties interested requested some of them in the Clatskanie Chief, whose former proprietors and their friends were strong supporters of Mr. White. If the Clatskanie Siwash knew anything about the politics of this county he would know that Mr. White has not been friendly to the political aspirations of the editor of the Mist. On the con trary, we have received much more encouragement, especially in Clatskanie precinct, from the men who made the fight against Mr. White. SAFEGUARDING LIFE A short time ago a man was killed in an accident on the logging road of the Peninsula Logging Company. He had at tempted to make a coupling and had missed. As he raised his head the ends of the logs on the two cars came together and crushed out his life. The eoroner took the testimony of the foreman of the camp, and, we beleive of two others, both of whom held that the accident was the fault of the dead man, the theory being. we suppose, that he should have dodged down and out instead of rising. It is, of course, possible that he tried to do so and met with some kind of an interference that caused him to raise his head and meet his death. He may have slipped and, recovering, raised up, or he may have been struck by a pebble or a weed. He is dead and cannot tell just how the accident occured. We do know however that no such accident could have occured on the logging road of the Co lumbia Timber Company, or any other road where automatic couplings are used, and we be leive the law requires that all roads use the automatic coupler, If it does not it should. Life and limb are altogether too cheap in the logging camps of Columbia The attention of the MY SUIT OF CONFEDERATE GREY I Words br Jinn W. lay, Ptrkett't Division, tlarielt'a brigade, liett) shunt, lev, July . labi.) The manager of one of the biggest camps in the We think the great majority ofi 5ounty inform3 u3 that this neon! will rav that is a nprfeetlv memoa oi loading is wrong ana fair proposition and of course we care nothing for the opinion of the Clatskanie Siwash. What ever may be the truth of the conflicting affidavits in regard to Sheriff White's conduct at Clats kanie on the night of September 24th, it must be admitted that ' the editor of this paper, as Chair man of the Republican County Committee, was entitled to be lieve that he was telling the truth, and we acted on that sup position. If we we were wrong the methods of the opposition are . to blame. The offense was al leged to have been committed on September 24th, and yet the chargewas notmade until Novem ber 1st, and no notice was given that such a charge was pending. Messrs. Norman Merrill, Henry Kratz, I. S. Bumgardner, J. W. McDonald, J. N. Rice and V. S. Malcom sign their names to a statement indorsing the state ments published in the Clatkanie Chief, and yet these gentleman must admit that in fairness to the Republican campaign mana gers, and in compliance with the spirit of the Corrupt Practices Act, the charge should have been made sooner and proper notice that it would be made given to Sheriff White. Of course, if the charges are absolutely true in every particular, that is a defense against prosecution, but we sub mit that the opponents of Martin White, knowing, as they claim, that he violated the law, owed it to the people of this county to make their charges at an earlier date. Aa to Harry Knighton, who made the affidavit, he either wore falsely then or when he took his oath of office, and his un supported affidavit was entitled to no consideration whatever, Tiut on mora statement t Th should be done away with. A PUBLIC DISGRACE When a person comes to St, Helens by boat the first impres sion that they receive of the town is the following sign, dis played in large and bold type: NOTICE This dock is not safe for man or beast. What kind of a feeling does this create in their mind? Does it make them realize what a good town they have struck or do they think that the residents of this town have a poor dock service that requires visitors to come in to the town over a dock which they say that they would not allow their live stock to pass over. The owner of the dock is in no blameable, as it is through his liberality that we have had any dock at all for some time, and the signs are only the protection to which he is entitled. There has for some time been considerable talk of a public dock. At a recent meeting of the city council the matter of putting up such a structure on some of the tide lands that are now in dis pute was discussed and it i3 just probable that it will be done. Some of the anti-prohibition workers in Missouri would be glad to see the water wagon hitched to a vagrant balloon that is trying for the long dis tance record. for consideration. Naval experts have practically agreed tnat the new type of ship, of which congress will be asked to auth orize the building of two, will be larger and heavier than the 27,000 ton ships now under construction. The tonnage limit will be Increased to at least 21000 and probably 29,000 when the plans 3re matured. The building program will probably include torpedo destroyers, and one additional ship, either an ammunition. repair, eupply or hospital ship. An important change in the building plans as outlined in the tentative pro gram will be enlargement of the de stroyers to 1000 tons. The largest now afloat in the United States navy are ob tons. This means tnat the larger grayhonnds of the navy, the scout destroyers, will become an ob solete class.
