Schaeffer, superintendent of publlo In struction In Pennsylvania, In their an tipathy to examinations. Dr. Schaeffer has gone so far as to say that be hoped he would see the day when examina tions would be abolished. "They are." ha said, "like drugs, since they have a primary as well as secondary effect In that they cause depression If kept up." Dr. Schaeffer la himself a keen stu dent and observer. He haa profited by his years of experience since bis connection with the public schools of the state and be knows whereof he speaks, says the Philadelphia Inquirer. But bis opinion In this respect Is not the result of deductions on the part of one man alone. There are many others who think with him. some of whom have so expressed themselves and other who, while convinced themselves, are too timid to take a de cided stand In the matter. There Is little doubt that the exam ination Is In many respects a barbar ous Institution. Education Is, in tne last analysis, only a means to an end. a process of gradual mental develop ment, a plan by which each day the mind Is broadened. To expect a child to pass successfully on details which It has used only as mental food and for gotten for five, six, seven or nine months seems not only unjust, but ridiculous. The consequence Is that as examination time approaches there Is a cramming of matter Into the mind, mental Indigestion ensues and. not In frequently, even the brightest students are Injured physically. In the big world where results count, a man Is not examined at the end of each year as to his work during the past 12 months. The caliber of his work and endeavor at the end of each day Is what counts, and so It should he In the prepration for this real work. Cardinals have been known to alight upon window sills of bouses and peck at the panes, probably attracted by , their retlection in tbe glass. Birds aie not the only higher anl- J mala that lay eggs, two quadrupeda, j the duck billed platypus and tbe Aus-! trallao porcupine ant-eater, also lay them. j The rplr n'dooh, or "bird of death," j la the only venomous bird known to science, but there is very little known regarding its bablts, and especially Its venomous qualities. Wasliington The provisions! g"v" ernment of Nicaragua is Its fall, the Madrii army tottering t is demoral- iiod, consternation reikf" ' Managua and Pr. Madris, his general-in-miei. Toledo, and general Irias, are prepar ing to flee the country. ti.;. i.. ..tr...-t la the news received 1 11IO, by the State department from United States Consul Olivares at Managua, and these advices are conlirmed by dis patches from Mr. Johnson. United States consul at at Corinto. The panic in the capital is threaten ing the lives and property of Ameri cans. Crowds are related traversing the streets crying, "Death to the Americans." While the cruisers Vicksburg ami Yorktown are at Corinto and in close touch with the situation, the legation and consulates in Managua are under heavy police guard and preparations have been made to meet attacks on American lives and property. The situation grew out of the victory won Thursday by the revolutionists, who defeated a strong column of gov ernment troops and crossed the Tipi tapa river. The removal of the government army seems complete. Mr. Olivares reports thst General Toledo, who was in com mand of the Msdria troops, arrived in Managua following his defeat and announced that his fore had been seized with panic and (led when at tacked. Soldiees made their escape to Grenada while others continued their (light to the capital. Grenada appears to be at the mercy of an undieiplincd mob of soldiers, who are reported to be pillaging the houses there. It is added that the Kstradan force is already at the gates of the city and is preparing to take the place by as sault. From the evident demoralized condition of the Madrii forces, observ ers believe that Granada will be taken by Estrada with little trouble and the way to the capital thua practically will be clear. It seems tho unanimous opinion in Managua. Mr. Olivares reports, thst tho power of Madrii is steadily weak ening and that hia overthrow may be momentarily expected. The revolu tionary army is only 20 miles from the capital and the capture of Managua is looked upon as inevitable. BURBANK'S LATEST A PEACH. Juice and Color of Crasvfoed Sur round Small Colorless Pit. Santa Rosa Horticulturists and fruitgrowers are united in their praise f the two new vsrities of peaches and one of plums producted by Luther Bur- bank, the plant wizard. Crosses of the Crawford am) Muir siiecies have resulted in a fruit of greaU-r commer- ial value. The Rartlett plum seed ling is also a betterment in shape, col or and preponderance of flesh over pit. Most of the juiciness and high color the Crawford tx-arh haa been trans ferred by Hurbank to the smaller and firmer pit of the Muir. The color-free pit of the Muir la also retained. The gor and ability of the new trees U resist disease, is still another recom mendation of the Hurbank creations. E. J. Wickson, dean of the college of agriculture of the University of Cali fornia, pronounces tho new variety "a peach." Private Timber Protected. Clover Creek, Ore. The forest fire which baa been raging here for the past week Is still spreading and the soldiers promised have not yet arrived, ami there are not men enough to con trol the flames. It is beinir held in heck on the west by firefiifhtera. There aro between B0 and 00 men fighting fire for the lumber companies. Coyote Bito; Then Rabies. Asotin, Wash An unknown sheen- herder was found along the Snake riv er 20 miles from here in a very precar ious condition with rabies, resulting from a bite of a mad covote. The sheepherder was coming down the riv er from the mountains where he had been employed for several months. As he was passing over a hieh rim roek. he was confronted by a coyote, which, when within a few feet made a sprinir. burying its teeth deeo into the flesh of his body.
