It means better roads, better schools, and a lower rate of tax ation. . E. H. Flagg. At the close of the Republican Assembly in Douglas County Honorable Binger Hermann is reported as having "congratula ted the Assembly on getting back into the 'good old way." Binger Hermann is one of the distinguished prodncts of the "good old way." At present he is under indictment for conspir acy to defraud the Government of the United States out of an immense publid domaiu. He was Commissioner of the General Land Office at the time the frauds were perpetrated, ar.d he owed his appointment to that position to the '"good old way" of doing things. He was liberal with the pork and looked after his friends, and therefore many of them Btill adhere to him, and probably. if the "good old way" still pre vailed, he could secure the Re publican nomination for Con gress. It is the same in other States where the "good old way" yet prevails, in Uhio the reg- Hlars" won out against the in surgents by the old method, and now Ecss Cox, of Cincinnati, kicks over the traces and tells how he to betrayed by Senator Burton. The statement, which is made Kfore a notary public, and witnessed by Joseph Garret son, manaf ing editor of the Cin- cinnati Times-Star relates that hwz0 fu Intle wiom of uii u:e mgnt 01 duiy .7, ai ice Crittauden Hotel in Coluicbu. ' A WORD OF WARNING Columbia is the strongest Re publican county in the State of Oregon in proportion to its population, yet it has been re peatedly demonstrated that a nomination on the Republican ticket is not equivalent to election. Theodore Roosevelt would receive to-day, if there were a national election, a majority of 1,000, out of a total vote of twice that number, yet the same voters might defeat a Republican nom ination for a county office if for instance they believed the timber speculators desired his presence on the county board of equal lzation. Party ties have gradually loosened since the civil war, and the man who has voted the straight ticket for forty years is looked upon as an antiquated ass whose proper place is in the home for aged imbeciles. In Oregon the Republican party is divided on a matter of principle, and can never be re-united unti the battle is fought to a finish and either the reactionaries or the progressives are firmly in the saddle. The preservation of the direct primary law and the principle of election of United States Senators by direct vote of the people through the medium of Statement No. 1, are the live issues of this campaign. lne Portland Assembly sug gested the nomination by this district of Mr. Clarke, a business man, as joint senator for Clack amas, Multnomah, and Columbia County. Mr. Clarke is frank in his opposition to Statement Nol, and for that reason he must be beaten at the primary election Let the contest rest on that alone. No doubt he is in other respects a good citizen, for the shrewd oldtimers who framed up the As sembly job knew they must put their best men to the front in order to stand any show of suc cess. If we are to have any reform m the Lnited States Senates membership men who believe as Mr. Clarke believes must not be e!ec:ed to the Legislature. They Cox, by atpointment, met Bur ton in the letter's rooms and promised verbally to divide ths vote of the Cuyahoga Co'nty,, deletion or Governor between Judge Oren Britt Brown, Carrri A. Thompson, and '. Warren G. Harding. Cox says Burton failed him by failing to deliver votes for Lrown on the first bal lot, and on the second throwing the entire delegation to Nicholas Longworth. whom Cox says Bur ton had told him the night be fore v,'a3 a "snob," who, if nom- inated, would cost the Republi cans 10,GC'i votes in Cuyahoga County, in which Cleveland is located. Think of a system by which one man controls the entire vote of the cour.ty's delegation in the convention, and uses his. power just a? it has heretofore been used in Oregon, to trade and trafiic with. That is what is meant by the Assembly or Con vention system, and that is what we v:ill return to in Oregon if the A assembly candidates triumph. WILL YOU HELP? Nothing htlps a county more than thorough advertising of its natural resources, and there is no Letter advertising than an act un! ahov. ing of our products, such r.b I luve been employed to make at the State Fair next month. In addition to this, we will have a fine exhibit, in the Portland ChamlK?r of Commerce and Ji'treral Fpace in the Great Northern lUtilroad Company's car, which ,ilHe seen by hun dreds of .thousands of farmers and business men throughout the United Slates this fall. For the exhibit at the State Fair the, county pav-j mc$400. The other two exhibits cost the county notliir;;-. New, will you, Mr. Fanner, ht lp me in this work? I v.'iinii the best grains and grassc, vegetables and fruits. Send os bring them to me At St. the jwple and the people should have co faith in them. Mr. Clarke, If electa.. wHl be one of the strong pillars of the system that has packed the United States Senate with the agents of the great corporate interests. In Ore gon hi3 election will herald the return to the old system, whereby the business interests of the peo ple were sacrificed to the political interests of individuals. Let the voters remember this and vote with the full knowledge of what they are doing. - Better a Democrat who favors Statement No. 1 than a Re publican who is opposed to it, be cause the Democrat if elected to the State Senate would, two years hence, vote for the people's choice for United States Senator while Mr. Clarke would vote without any regard whatever to the wishes of the people, pro vided the caucus so decided.
