Coroner Rainier TO PROTECT LIFE AND LIMB. lne Labor orpranizations ar working along right lines in their endeavor to secure from the next , Legislature an adequate law for " the . protection of employes, though it appears from a recent decision of the United States Court of Appeals for the State of Missouri that a State law will not afford much protection so long as the corporations control the higher court A working girl had her fingers cut off by a machine and sued the corporation for damages. The jury decided in her f aver, and the corporation took the case to the United States Court of Ap peals, which decided, in the language of Judge Sanborn, that the woman was not entitled to any damages because in the lang uage of the court, the danger was apparent, and the woman could have quit her job. it is to the credit of one of the judges that he emphatically dissented from this infamous doctrine. Working people, as a rule, can not quite their jobs, and es pecially is this true of working girls. The Missouri law provided, as does the law in this State, that machinery must be properly safeguarded, but the appellate court set aside that law in favor of the corporation. The fact that one of the judges dissented is significant as showing that the law is just what the judges say it is, and therefore, those who favor just laws for all must see to it that men are put on the bench who will not be the ser vants of the corporations. Attendance or mernoers at a base ball game in Washington Saturday interfered with the transaction of business in the U. S. senate, preventing a vote on certain provisions of the railroad bill, wherect Senator Aldrich kicked, enough of his men being absent to make it inadvisable to proceed to vote without them. If a perpetual ball game could keen certain absentees away per petually, it would be a good thing tor the country to arrange to have it. A Small Attendance But Good Work lit Houlton. Tiki spring meeting of the IVyiorm (irnnfreiealwAVI a slilu one. Fnturdnv' g.illi. riiiK Rt lloulton was no exception to ill rule. As hmii1, there were num ber of retolul ions pssfcd, the most im portant of which, from (he (irane stiuid point, ws one opposing thil clevtioa of Miy one not farmer to Ih.i olliec of Master of the State Grange. Austher provided for the conp.Hisation t f county deputies, snil discusai u developed the f.ict that those present were, of tlie opinion th it Grunge work is being con ducted in wltogetlpr too cheap a style. Columbia County Grangers believe that Anything worth having is worth paying tor at a reasonable rate, and they realise that the Grange will not grow as it should until competent men are paid fair salaries for organization work. The dues should be doubled and the money wisely spent in building up the order. The third resolution was of local iuteiest and calls upon the county court to require jueticts of lbs peace to exact bonds for costs Iron person biinging criminal actions. There is merit in the Idea, but ot course nothing should be done that will de prive a poor tnan of hi 4 right to justice. The next Portion will meet at Natal in August, on the luniks of the Nehalem river, and even-body who can will be theie. Three lijiht wagons for sale cheap. Inquire cf John Havelick, Scappoose, Oregon, This is a good opportunity to pr.rehase a serviceable rig at a low price. iltf John Havkuck, Scappoose, Ore. St. Helens 8; CUukanie, 0. Tiie Clatskauie boys put up a fast game lor live inuinas last Sunday and go se jed the H. Helens hoys in a way that was beautiful to see, but they were not there with the steady game necessary to win. Iu the six inning Summers got on and was brought home bv Oivi n's tw bagger. From then on it was easy. Another ace was scored in the seventh, in the eighth llryuut walked everyone who came up, and four more scores were ta'lied, with a pair in the niuih to make it an even 8 to 0. Clatskanie has a swell iu field and the boys showed what they can do on a fast diamond. McDonald took a number of hard chances without a miss, and Laws got 11 put outs and no errors. Austin played a good fast game arouud the 3rd sack. JlcDufhVa arm was in perfect shape and his work wasAl. lirakke pitched a beautiful game, but three hits be:ng secured. Except for one bad inn ing when he was wild, llryaot did gnat work. He struck out 11, with 3 hits. He is undoubtedly a coming pitcher. Next Sunday, Portland Blues vs St. Hel ens at this place.
